And Bull Connor was the first person that was on the site as if he knew that they were going to bomb the church. And Reverend Shuttlesworth came out of his house with cotton... the bed that he was sleeping in was just cotton was all over him. And somebody in the crowd said, Reverend Shuttlesworth, said.. they trying to kill you. Say... you need to consider leaving Birmingham and Reverend Shuttlesworth stood on the front porch with cotton and in his pajamas and said, if God can deliver me from this, y'all go tell Bull Connor I'm here for the duration. And he was encouraged more to fight for the rights. They tried to kill him, but they couldn't kill him. Bob Friedman (BF): Do you remember that day? DG: I remember. I went out on, I went to the scene to see it. BF: Yeah, and that would have been, it would have been in the 50s, I wonder. We can find that out in the news. (December 25, 1956) DG: Yeah, we can find, yeah, you can find the day that the, that was a dark day in Collegeville because nobody knew the word, they knew that the church had been bombed and that Reverend Shuttlesworth was in the parsonage, but only the people that lived near him knew that he was alright. But he came out, I mean, his bed, he was blown out of his bed. They had another station in Da Nang, I believe. BF: Did they play popular music? SM: Yeah, yeah. Good stuff. It was everything, they played everything. BF: Were you curious about that? SM: I was curious about that. I never lost my curiosity for the technical aspect of radio, and after I got back, somehow, I just by chance took the ACT and passed that, then I applied at Loyola University for their business school. I was accepted there, and then during that time I was driving a cab. The yellow cab. I was a lease cab driver. It’s where you make the money. BF: I did it. SM: Yeah. Lease cab driving. Man, I loved it. BF: You get paid every day. SM: Yeah. You get paid every day. You make a nice buck. Every day. BF: I can’t say what I did with that. SM: Oh man. I can’t say either. It’s a lot of stuff… BF: Anyways… SM: Anyways, I used to get a ride that was a- I got a regular ride every day. I’d pick her up at 5 o’clock. It was a little, old, white lady. Gray hair, or white hair, and I’d drop her off in downtown Chicago at this big building. I didn’t know what was in there. We got to be kind of friendly, talking and stuff, and I finally asked her What the heck do you do down here? And she said I’m the night jock at WLUP. Trudy Fisher was her name. Title A name given to the resource Collins "Bo" Berry, Oral History Description An account of the resource Collins “Bo” Berry, a much loved horn player in the tradition of be bop jazz, “Bo” - as his many fans call him - was born in Homewood’s Rosedale neighborhood “over the mountain” south of Birmingham Alabama, and has played trumpet since childhood. His formative years will sound familiar to those growing up without a lot in the 1950’s, and with loving parents. A veteran of the second generation Birmingham jazz tradition, its roots reaching back to the early 20th Century, Bo’s commitment to believing in himself saw him travel nationally with the renowned Commodores soul group. Here, Bo shares his recollection of those times including memories of the Sand Ridge Country Club and later, Tall Paul’s “Fun Land,” both night spots in the southern Oxmoor hills of Birmingham. Most moving is his storied struggle to come off the RnB road, back to Birmingham and commit to a new genesis, focusing on mastering jazz. Eddie Castleberry: Ah, JLD I came to in 1953, uh, or ’54. In 1954, when, when JLD was up on a mountain. GR: Yeah. EC: And you had to go way up on the mountain. And I was up there with a bunch of people like, uh, Roberta Roland and King Porter and, um, Willie McKinstry, who is my good friend. GR: Oh, right. You remember Gatemouth Moore. EC: Yes, I worked with Gatemouth. We were on EDR together. And, uh, I saw Gatemouth the last time I was here. Last time I was in Birmingham. GR: What was he like, as a… EC: Oh, he was a personality. He used to preach sermons like, uh, the baseball ...uh the baseball suit, and he’d be in the pulpit with a baseball suit on, and he’d preach he’d say “the baseball game of life” and he’d have a catcher’s mit and a ball. [Both chuckle] GR: So he was a showman? EC: Yeah, a real showman. And he also, before he became a minister he was a famous blues singer. GR: Ok. EC: And I got his record at home now, “I Ain’t Mad at You, Pretty Baby.” It was a big thing. GR: Wow, that’s funny. We had him on a few months back, and he was quite a character. EC: Yeah, I know. GR: When did you start workin for the, uh, the network, the major network? EC: Oh, that was, that was something else. Like, like all, most things that I’ve gotten in radio, that was a lucky break. I was doing a, I was workin in Washington, DC, and I was doing a program, midnight to 6, in Washington. And some guy called me and said “Hey man, I heard you on the air, and you sound pretty good. Did you know that they’re starting a black news network?” I said “Really?” And I had a background in news. Because during that time all black disc jockeys had to do news and play records. GR: Ok. EC: And, you know, they had to have a news background. I had a news background, so I went over and I got the job. All of a sudden I’m on 350 radio stations. I never wanted to play God and I don’t think that I’m invincible. However, since that time there’s been such a terrific response on the part of the local people – in particular, the masses and many of the people who are not…who are a little bit above the masses, we’ll say the classes. They’ve been all of one voice in asking me to stay. Now, my immediate concern is not whether I stay or go; of course, it’s nice to be loved, but it’s better to be needed. It’s better to have something to do; it’s better to have something to commit yourself to. And that’s my job. Major organizer and activist of the Birmingham Civil Rights Movement with Dr. Martin Luther King. Pastor, Bethel Baptist Church, Collegeville, Birmingham. Rev. Shuttlesworth was interviewed by two WJLD announcers in 1966: Lewis White and Rick Upshaw. The occasion was the 10th Anniversary of the founding of the ACMHR. As WJLD's studio location was in transition - from their Red Mountain location in Homewood to 19th Street and First Avenue, Birmingham, we are not certain of the location of the interview. The audio was on a 7" reel and found in a closet at the Birmingham Civil Rights Institute with the letters, WJLD, on the box. Dr. Fulani: And I… Fifth Caller: White women and minorities. Dr. Fulani: In ‘84… Gary: Listen what she has to say… Dr. Fulani: In ‘84 when Reverend Jackson, I guess that was the Mondale race, tried to do exactly what you’re doing, what you’re saying about rallying the rank and file. The leadership of the party changed the rules of the game so that he went into the convention after having gotten twenty-one percent of the vote on the ground with eleven percent of the delegates, and the party structure, the leadership said, we’ll move the presidential election to keep the more progressive forces and black forces within this party from taking hold. That was 1984 and this is 2006. I learned that in 1985. I think the rank and file of the Democratic Party, which also went to the convention in the last presidential election with ninety-five percent or more of the delegates opposing the war, being forced to support the war by the likes of Hillary Clinton and John Kerry and everybody who got up on that stage, they ended up choosing a pro-war candidate whose greatest claim to fame was “vote for me because I’m not George Bush.” And, that said, I have no faith, it wouldn’t matter to me who is the rank and file within the party, that the party structure and leadership will be changed, no matter what the issues are that people have because you don’t have the power nor the respect, um, to change that-that party. I think it’s much easier, as hard as it is, to build something outside of that structure of the two parties because then you can build it on the ground, and shape it, and use it in the way that you do. Gary: Real leverage… Fifth Caller: Excuse me, I disagree with that. I think… Dr. Fulani: Well then why aren’t you all doing better? Why’d you let them change the rules on Jesse? How come Jesse got treated like that? Who do you think they were slapping in the face… Fifth Caller: That’s one incident. Dr. Fulani: Why didn’t you all make a pro, I mean an anti-war statement? How come the delegates at convention in 2001 didn’t stand up, or 2004, and say to the leadership, “we aren’t pro-war. Title A name given to the resource Dr. Lenora Fulani, Oral History Description An account of the resource Dr. Lenora Fulani (April 25, 1950- ), a developmental psychologist from New York City, a major leader of the Independence Party of New York, who in 1988, became the first woman and the first African American to gain access to the presidential ballot in all 50 states and the District of Columbia. She also became the first African American woman to qualify for federal primary matching funds during that campaign and again in 1992. Dr. Fulani is the founder of the Allstars Talent Show Network, a very successful anti-violence model reaching youth ages 5-25, in several U.S. cities. Here, Dr. Fulani explains her movement’s relationship with the then mayor of New York City, Michael Bloomberg, including Bloomberg’s move to become an independent, and she takes questions from the WJLD radio audience. He was my mentor, like Dr. King, Dr. King asked him he said, “well, what are we going to do? The only people that are willing to go now are the children, we can’t put the children out there.” And Bevel figured out a way. So what did he do? He came out to the schools. He couldn’t come on the school grounds, so he set up perimeters, away from the school grounds. On the street, and he asked different people “who are the leaders?” If you were a leader of the student government, he wanted you. If you were the leader of the football team, he wanted you. Well see, I just happened to be the leader of my cheerleaders. So being agile, and somewhat loud, he wanted me. And I was so excited about that. The different leaders that he had were those of us that really knew how to lead. Even though the majority of the leaders were the girls. But guess what, the boys, all we had to do was get the girls. The guys they would come, and they did come. But we had to sign pledges. They would give us a pledge. And the pledge was telling us that this was a nonviolent movement. It was a spiritual movement. And people ask me during my presentations today, well, “why do you call it D-Day?” I said D-Day was a day of deliverance. February 15, 1949) (G) - a lifelong resident of Birmingham, Alabama, “Gwen” graduated from Western Olin High School in 1967 after participating with thousands of other children in the mass marches of 1963 Birmingham during the May demonstrations. Gwen was arrested during that period. In 1975, Gwen joined the Birmingham Police Department as officer and detective and married Billy Webb, a white internal affairs officer in 1979. They stayed married for 23 years until his passing. The joyous and controversial marriage was featured in a “People” magazine article and TV special. In 1980, the couple served as newly elected Mayor Richard Arrington’s personal security detail. Gwen was part of the inaugural class of Leadership Birmingham in 1984 and served on the Jefferson County Judicial Commission from 1984 to 1989. In 2004, she became a founding member of the Board of Directors of the Birmingham Black Radio Museum and was featured in the Academy Award winning documentary, “Mighty Times - The Children March.” In 2005, she formed “God’s People United for a Better World: and came an ordained minister. She founded Foot Soldiers International in 2012 and received a Certificate in Advanced Biblical Studies from Samford University in 2021. She was appointed to the Board of Directors of the Birmingham Civil Rights Institute in 2019. She currently hosts groups of young people from around the world who want to learn about the incredible non-violent movement of the children of Birmingham when they marched for civil and human rights in 1963. She has one daughter, three grand children and three “triplet” great grands. PW: My beginning year, Shelley, was, uh, I wanna make this brief here because I could tell you, it’s a long story, but th-the late Virgil L. Harris was, uh, sponsoring, uh, uh, advertising, as he still is now on WATV, and at that time I was, uh- you were down at WENN, and uh, what happened, W, uh, E-N-N wanted to carry the Miles game, I was broadcasting Alabama A&M University football games, and, to shorten the story, what happened, uh, Mr.- late- Mr. Virgil Harris of Protective Industrial Insurance Company wanted to- this Miles College game picked up by y’all. Y’all picked it up, and, uh, I did the play-by-play, and so, uh, Joe Lackey and all the other powers that be down there, uh, had me to come down for a job, and I did my first broadcast on your show as- do- as news- as a newscaster, which, that was my forte then, as a newscaster, and I would do sports in your program. And that’s how I got my start. Now- SS: And what year was that, Paul? PW: It was, uh, back in the 60’s, I can’t tell you- SS: Well if I tell you, if I tell you the year, Paul, uh, would you remember? PW: Yes! SS: If I told you that it was Nineteen Hundred and Sixty-One? PW: You’re absolutely correct. SS: That was your first year here in Birmingham broadcasting with me. PW: You’re absolutely correct, I was- I was- uh, definitely, uh, uh, that was ’61, that is absolut- you’ve got a good memory! And, uh, uh, what happened, Shelley? I will tell you what happened: ah, as I understand it, you was offered a job a-at K-A-T-Z, St. Louis. Is that right or wrong? SS: Uh, I think I was offered a job an-and then I- what happened, Paul? Title A name given to the resource Paul "Tall Paul" White and Shelley "The Playboy" Stewart, Oral History Description An account of the resource Paul White (b. Aug. 16, 1936; d. Aug. 19, 2001) a classic discussion on WATV 900 AM Radio Birmingham, between two iconic Birmingham radio announcers. Paul White, commonly known as Tall Paul, and Shelly Stewart, known as Shelley the Playboy. Paul began his radio career in Huntsville with WEUP broadcasting Alabama A&M games, and was recruited in 1961 to be a sports and news broadcaster on WENN Birmingham, broadcasting Miles College games. He provided news and sports on Shelley Stewart’s morning show and later took over that slot as a morning man when Stewart left WENN for WJLD in 1962. White went on to become the community’s major civil rights focal point on radio during the 1963 children’s movement. In the 1970’s, he moved to WATV briefly and then WJLD until he retired in 1992. Under doctor’s care at the VA, Paul was invited by Stewart to be on the air as part of Stewart’s efforts to give past radio personalities opportunities to speak again with the community. The love and respect shown to Paul from community callers can readily be discerned in their voices.
