Dr. Fulani: In ‘84… Gary: Listen what she has to say… Dr. Fulani: In ‘84 when Reverend Jackson, I guess that was the Mondale race, tried to do exactly what you’re doing, what you’re saying about rallying the rank and file. The leadership of the party changed the rules of the game so that he went into the convention after having gotten twenty-one percent of the vote on the ground with eleven percent of the delegates, and the party structure, the leadership said, we’ll move the presidential election to keep the more progressive forces and black forces within this party from taking hold. That was 1984 and this is 2006. I learned that in 1985. I think the rank and file of the Democratic Party, which also went to the convention in the last presidential election with ninety-five percent or more of the delegates opposing the war, being forced to support the war by the likes of Hillary Clinton and John Kerry and everybody who got up on that stage, they ended up choosing a pro-war candidate whose greatest claim to fame was “vote for me because I’m not George Bush.” And, that said, I have no faith, it wouldn’t matter to me who is the rank and file within the party, that the party structure and leadership will be changed, no matter what the issues are that people have because you don’t have the power nor the respect, um, to change that-that party. I think it’s much easier, as hard as it is, to build something outside of that structure of the two parties because then you can build it on the ground, and shape it, and use it in the way that you do. Gary: Real leverage… Fifth Caller: Excuse me, I disagree with that. I think… Dr. Fulani: Well then why aren’t you all doing better? Why’d you let them change the rules on Jesse? How come Jesse got treated like that? Who do you think they were slapping in the face… Fifth Caller: That’s one incident. Dr. Fulani: Why didn’t you all make a pro, I mean an anti-war statement? She also became the first African American woman to qualify for federal primary matching funds during that campaign and again in 1992. Dr. Fulani is the founder of the Allstars Talent Show Network, a very successful anti-violence model reaching youth ages 5-25, in several U.S. cities. Long was...So he ended up owning the name after the Clark Brothers left and Doc Green just stuck it out. And, how did y'all meet? Because Doc was with the original Five Crowns. Wooding, Jr.(b. Nov. 28, 1923, d. Oct. 31, 2015). Eight decades singing gospel quartet in Jefferson County, Alabama, at 89, Norman reflects in conversation on the conditions in the 1930’s and 40’s surrounding the development of quartet singing in the Birmingham area and his love for the music. For 12 years, Norman was the President of the Pillars of Birmingham (2005-2012), a local quartet that included in its last manifestation, Henry Burton, Don Solomon, John Lawrence and Bob Friedman. BS: In Ferndale, Michigan. BF: Oh, alright. BS: We grew up in the same neighborhood and you know, back at that time groups of our caliber was very popular. BF: Right BS: And so that was really just a past time thing to do. Every street corner you found a group of guys harmonizing on the corner. BF: Did you know other groups from Ferndale? BS: Uh, we had two or three little groups. Yeah. BF: I know that there was an SRC label up out of Ferndale. Uh, that produced The DeeJays. A group called The DeeJays. BS: Uh huh BF: Um, which was...it was the State Recording Company. But it was not the one that was...not the States label from Chicago. BS: Mhm BF: But there was a State Recording Company out of Ferndale, Michigan that had a group on it. BS: Oh BF: It's hard to find, of course. BS: Oh, wow. I wasn’t familiar with that myself. BF: Yeah. From about 1953-54. When did you guys start singing together in high school? BS: Well...we was just playin' around on the corner. BF: Mhm BS: I guess about in the late 50s. BF: Mhm BS: And we... BF: You have any specific.... BS: and Harvey Fuqua and Gwen Gordy about ’59… BF: Right BS: And that's when they formed Tri Phi records. BF: Right BS: And..."That's What Girls Are Made For" was the first record released on that label in 1961. BF: Right. Right. BS: So ...from there...we stay on the Tri-Phi label until '64. Tri-Phi label like, could never really get off the ground. BF: Right BS: After "That's What Girls Are Made For" we had some mediocre stuff. BF: Right BS: But after that, the company merged with Motown. BF: Okay. Just like Harvey merged with Gwen, huh? BS: Yeah, right. So. BF: (laughs) BS: That's how we got to Motown. Title A name given to the resource 500 block, 18th Street North, Birmingham, 1940s Description An account of the resource Box 1 Folder 5: "Box 1 number 5 is an approximation of the 500 block of 18th Street North in Birmingham from the 1940s. Obtained at the archives, the archive section of the Birmingham Public Library, which received many many pictures from the Jefferson County tax assessor’s files. Everything from 1977 back was transferred to the Birmingham archives. This was obtained sometime in the 1990s. The purpose of obtaining it was to try and picture the location, which was the block in which WENN was housed before their building at 15th and 5th was constructed which was constructed in 1961.. They were located in a storefront adjacent to the old main post office on 18th Street. This information came from an interview with Erskine Fausch who said that they had used blankets to separate rooms back then. This is while they were waiting on their building on 15th and 5th to be constructed.
