That's what I liked. BF: You think it's that early? 1942? NW: Huh? BF: Cuz they went on the air in April of 1942 for the first time. NW: I know… We went on the air with them in ‘44 BF: Yeah NW: with Kelley Choral Singers… BF: Right NW: Yeah so they had been going on BF: Oh. So you knew that they had played NW: Yeah. Gospel BF: Gospel before you even… you say well let's give it a try NW: Yeah. There was a gospel station and an FM station, see. BF: Well the FM didn't come till 1948. NW: I’m talking later on… BF: Yeah NW: : I’m talking later on… I just said there was an FM an a ‘42 station BF: Mhm. Mhm NW: But ’42, I mean on AM they played gospel BF: Right NW: Yeah. Real gospel BF: So now, if you're saying that one of the reasons you approach them with the Kelley Choral Singers. Did you do the approaching or was it McKinstry? Who made the contact? NW: Stallworth and Johnson had a recorded program in Bessemer and McKinstry approached 'em and he said, “what about we come on live?” So he okayed it. That's how we come on there. BF: On JLD NW: Yeah BF: And that was still out in Bessemer. NW: Yeah that was in Bessemer BF: At the hotel? NW: Yeah BF: Mhm NW: At the... BF: At the Realty Building NW: Mhm BF: Yeah. Wooding, Jr.(b. Nov. 28, 1923, d. Oct. 31, 2015). Eight decades singing gospel quartet in Jefferson County, Alabama, at 89, Norman reflects in conversation on the conditions in the 1930’s and 40’s surrounding the development of quartet singing in the Birmingham area and his love for the music. For 12 years, Norman was the President of the Pillars of Birmingham (2005-2012), a local quartet that included in its last manifestation, Henry Burton, Don Solomon, John Lawrence and Bob Friedman. BS: In Ferndale, Michigan. BF: Oh, alright. BS: We grew up in the same neighborhood and you know, back at that time groups of our caliber was very popular. BF: Right BS: And so that was really just a past time thing to do. Every street corner you found a group of guys harmonizing on the corner. BF: Did you know other groups from Ferndale? BS: Uh, we had two or three little groups. Yeah. BF: I know that there was an SRC label up out of Ferndale. Uh, that produced The DeeJays. A group called The DeeJays. BS: Uh huh BF: Um, which was...it was the State Recording Company. But it was not the one that was...not the States label from Chicago. BS: Mhm BF: But there was a State Recording Company out of Ferndale, Michigan that had a group on it. BS: Oh BF: It's hard to find, of course. BS: Oh, wow. I wasn’t familiar with that myself. BF: Yeah. From about 1953-54. When did you guys start singing together in high school? BS: Well...we was just playin' around on the corner. BF: Mhm BS: I guess about in the late 50s. BF: Mhm BS: And we... BF: You have any specific.... BS: and Harvey Fuqua and Gwen Gordy about ’59… BF: Right BS: And that's when they formed Tri Phi records. BF: Right BS: And..."That's What Girls Are Made For" was the first record released on that label in 1961. BF: Right. Right. BS: So ...from there...we stay on the Tri-Phi label until '64. Tri-Phi label like, could never really get off the ground. BF: Right BS: After "That's What Girls Are Made For" we had some mediocre stuff. BF: Right BS: But after that, the company merged with Motown. BF: Okay. Just like Harvey merged with Gwen, huh? BS: Yeah, right. So. BF: (laughs) BS: That's how we got to Motown. I was Tall Paul, I was everybody. Anybody that was on the radio, I said, “I could do it.” So I would change my name to their name and try to work on skills and practice intro-ing records and ah, radio was very important when it comes to timing, and it’s like you have to be, you know, very, ah, precise with your timing and so I was just really fascinated with that. And I- Bob Friedman: Is that, now when, when you’re ten years old in 1972, uh, twelve or whatever- CB: 1972, yeah BF: Um, you’re in school, yes? CB: I’m in school. BF: Where are you going to school? CB: I went to school at Lewis Elementary at that time and they had a program, ah, that was designed for people with disability like myself. And ah, my teachers and- BF: Can you describe your disability? CB: I’ll elaborate on my disability, which I have cerebral palsy. And ah- BF: Were you born with cerebral palsy? CB: I was born with cerebral palsy, yes. I came in fighting…I was fighting for my life, so, and still fighting [laughs] and still today, so, I- and it’s very, you know it’s very interesting to me to-to want to do radio and- and after I started getting around, and hanging around different people, ah, it just really just blew my mind, and said “I want to do this.” And someone ah, by the name of Eddie Young, he was uh one of those fly-by-night jocks that came in at BUL radio. And they would actually- he did it, and John Ray did it, and when I mean that, they would actually pick me up in their arms. B: You were 16 in ’52. So you were born in 1936? T: Correct. B: And how did you find WJLD? Now you sent for that book in 1952, but how long had you been listening to the station? T: Well, since ’49. B: Since ’49? T: Bob Umbach. And even at night they used to have a popular show, 10 to 12, playing popular music. B: Yes. T: And I listened to that. I don’t remember who announced. One time they had a girl on there. B: And that was on JLD? T: Uh huh. B: Uh huh. What do you remember about Bob Umbach? Did you ever meet him? T: Well, one time I went down there on, his birthday was on January the first. B: January the first, you remember that…. T: That was his birthday. And I got my mother to send him a telegram, “Happy birthday!” B: Uh huh. T: He read that all day long. (laughs) B: Did he really? Where was WJLD at the time? T: Down the superhighway. Where Jones Auto Parts is now. B: Ok, ok. And now it’s Austin Auto Parts. T: Right. B: They changed it. It’s that funny looking building with the port holes for windows. T: Right. B: Uh huh. And did you ever go down to that? T: Yeah, I went down one New Year’s Day. Rode the bus down there and got out. I spotted the door’s open. B: Where’d you live at the time? T: West End. Tommy began listening to Bob Umbach in 1949. Tommy called Bob Friedman in 2005 letting him know he had a Rhythm and Blues Encyclopedia (actually the Rhythm and Blues Jazz Scrapbook) from 1952, and that Bob Umbach told him to order it by mail. He brought it to the station and donated it to the BBRM. We made him a copy. Tommy also shared what he remembered about Bob Umbach and early Birmingham radio. And you really...I have said many times that I don't even think the White people who controlled everything back then, or even today, are fully conscious of how enslaved they were while they had their operatives tryin' to keep us enslaved. You know, um, when you think of the subversive acts between the officials up, all up and down the line. The local officials, the sheriffs, the police, the Klan. BF: Mhm FS: The judges, the leaders of Birmingham who said they were making progress. Foolin' people... since they were tryin' to get justice and had...didn't have justice on their mind...... BF: Mhm FS: I used to say... I don't know how the Lord got, had me to figure it out, but segregation was a sort of a three tiered thing. They'd say well if the Klan don't stop you, the police will. It's the police miss ya then the courts'll get ya. BF: Right FS: So you, what you would just...it was designed and nobody could pay. BF: Mhm FS: You shall not pass. BF: Mhm FS: But, uh, I always said well God said light shines in darkness and darkness can't stop it. BF: We have some similar problems today with the courts. Uh... FS: Oh yes. BF: That are very tough in Alabama. FS: Yes BF: To get, uh...I mean our...You're probably familiar we had a big brawl and still continue to in terms of the ownership of the water system. FS: Oh yeah BF: And of always had to go up against judges who seem to have their minds made up already. Uh. FS: I call that a system of spiritual wickedness in high place, when you get in the high place, and forget what you're there for...let politics, uh, intrigue really stops the progress of the people moving forward. BF: Yes FS: I think that's the main thing. I don't... BF: That's the main thing. FS: I think people in position...well when you have position and power... BF: Mhm FS: You can really slow progress. How you can help to get forward and I always believed that you oughta use opportunities that God gives you to move things forward and make things better for people. Fred Lee Shuttlesworth (b. March 18, 1922; d. October 5, 2011) – Rev. Shuttlesworth, a Birmingham Baptist Minister and Pastor of the Bethel Baptist Church in Birmingham from 1953 to 1961. He was the founder of the Alabama Christian Movement for Human Rights (ACMHR) in 1956 in response to the State of Alabama banning the NAACP. A major leader in the struggle for Civil Rights in Birmingham and nationally, he left Birmingham in 1961 but returned frequently to participate in the struggle. One of the leaders to organize the Southern Christian Leadership Conference with Dr. Martin Luther King, Rev. Title A name given to the resource Reflections on Trumon Puckett from his son, Rod Puckett Description An account of the resource Trumon Puckett (b. Aug 2, 1917 - d. Jan 30, 1967) - one of Birmingham radio's most famous names. Trumon Puckett was well know in gospel radio circles in both the Black and white communities with his "Gospel Ship" program on WJLD 1400. Beginning his career at WJ:LD in 1944, his on air shift covered some 23 years. He was a ham radio operator and a record promoter, recording one of Birmingham's most famous gospel groups, the Ensley Jubilees. Here, his son Rod Puckett, shares his childhood memories of his father. The 3 minutes clip from 1966 includes Trumon Puckett, Deacon Richmond Davis and the beginning of a sermon by C.L. Franklin. At the close, Trumon introduces "J.J. the Dee Jay." That would have been Ed "Johnny Jive" McClure. He really picked that cotton and all that. He had all that stuff there. I had to bail hay. I went through the whole country life, I did it all. Bob Friedman: But you also had your harmonica. SFJ: Yeah, yeah. And my harmonica. I was playin' and...I had this school down there, the..twelfth grade. I graduated there at Linden Academy. And I graduated there in Linden, Alabama. I got to know all the people 'bout playin' the harmonica and all those little shows they had. The little talent shows. The guys in my class, we all formed a little band and we played all over town. A lot of the big bands heard about me and they wanted to talk to me. They lived in Thomasville, Alabama, on down around Demopolis and they all wanted me to come and I didn't have no money. I had no way to do nothin'. BF: How? Who were some of the big bands you talkin' about? SFJ: Oh they were little bands. I can't call his name now but, he was workin' at a cleaners there in Linden and he heard about me. Called me. Me and him had an interview and talked a little bit. And he invited me to some of the clubs that they were playin'. I don't know the name of the clubs. BF: How did you get your first harmonica? SFJ: Oh, 'bout from Sonny Boy Williamson. They was uh...that's some kind of story there. Uh, he was, you know, all those guys back then drink that White Lightning'. That liquor, you know? And he would come to our backyard parties and play the harm'. He didn't have nothin' but just the harmonica and a microphone and the old Sears/Roebuck amp. And he would blowin' through. BF: Right SFJ: And he'd come near me, nothin' but the harp and things and he'd be tappin' his foot on the cardboard floor we had there. And he'd be pumpin' out them blues on that harmonica. And then when he got through, you know, they was drinkin' and everything. He'd throw, you know, the harmonicas around and gave me one and he showed me a few things. Cause he saw I was interested. WLAC was a popular station at the time with John Richbourg and "Hoss" Allen, but there was a little small station called WVOL there, too. Was very popular and the Black community grew up listening to people, uh, Clarence Kilcrease, better known as "Gilly Baby." I went to his appreciation about...Mm, 'bout six, seven months ago up in Nashville. One of the popular churches there. They were recognizing him. It's been there for years, but grew up listening to people like Ed Hall and Chuck Mitchell. Bill Perkins, Noble Blackwell. Bob Friedman: These were African Americans... DD: Yes BF: On the air. DD: Mhm. Very popular up there. As a matter of fact, Noble and Bill gave me my break. In Nashville at the time. But I just grew up listening to radio. Enjoyed the personalities. They were always upbeat and it always amazed me how they were able to be this way every day. Just friendly and lively and...course I've always loved music. BF: Mhm DD: And these guys just intrigued me. And I just listened to 'em day and night. And then late at night, I would turn over on WLAC and listen to "Hoss" Allen, John Richbourg. These guys just really excited me to listen to it. BF: Yeah DD: It was just something I started workin' on. BF: Mhm DD: And practicing my craft. Gettin' me a little small recorder and started recordin' my voice. BF: Mhm DD: Course, like most guys in this business back durin' that time, I got started in 1969. Started doin' parties. BF: Mhm DD: And I got recognized around the community doin' that and... BF: Did ya have your own system? DD: Yeah! Yeah, I did. At that time it was just one turntable. BF: Well... DD: It was an old P.A. system with a microphone and... BF: Mhm DD: a couple of speakers. BF: Yeah DD: And you know you get... BF: No scratching, huh? DD: (laughs) No scratching, then. BF: (laughs) DD: But, uh... BF: But uh... DD: We drew crowds. BF: What's your date of birth? I should ask that. DD: November 2nd, 1949. BF: Okay. DD: Yeah BF: Alright DD: I'll be 66 this year. Tommy: He was a hell of a disc jockey. Yeah, and I remember when they had that Sound Off... He was the first one with that talk radio. Bob: Eh hmmm. Do you remember what year that was? Tommy: Ahh, Sound Off, it should have been in the early 70’s. Bob: It was. Tommy: uh huh. Bob: Well back then, there was nobody Black on the city council, Arrington had not gotten elected yet, what did he talk about as a talk show host? Tommy: Well, he would talk about the issues that were going on in Birmingham. And and… Bob: He talk about the Vietnam War? Tommy: Well, he talked about the Vietnam War plus he had been in the military too. Bob: hmm Tommy: Jimmy was a First Lieutenant when he came back here…… Bob: hmm Tommy: And he would talk about the situation with Birmingham because Birmingham wasn't the best city to be in back in those days because we had Blacks getting killed by policemen every week and all of it was justificable homicide. Bob: hmm Tommy: And basically and mainly we didn’t have nothing you know like voter registration, ah, we talked about integration and all this kind of stuff you know and equal opportunity for peoples. That was mainly his conversation and he didn’t hold anything back…. Bob: Did he ever get in any trouble with the authorities? Tommy: No, I don’t think Jimmy ever got into any trouble with the authorities because Jimmy was a little arrogant himself. He really didn’t hold nothing back. Bob: hmm Tommy: He didn’t hold back nothing on management, or anything. Jimmy Lawson was just Jimmy Lawson but he’s a real good friend of mine. We came through high school together. I think he got out of high school ah in 62 and I got out in 64. Title A name given to the resource Reflections on Maurice "Thin Man" King, from his wife Lessie King Description An account of the resource Richard Maurice "Thin Man" King (b.Sept. 15, 1937; d.June 17, 1980) - born in Uniontown, Alabama to mother Ora Lee Evans (her second marriage last name, not her maiden name) and father Konnie King. "Thin Man," as he was known on the air at WENN 1320 AM in the 1960's, had a very distinctive style on the air - explosive is one way to describe his delivery - announcing "Dandy Daddy Thin Man on the air!" King started his radio career in the early 1960's at WCLS, Columbus, Georgia, working with Doctor Jive (referenced by Shelley Stewart on his 1999 WATV broadcast), followed by a stint in Little Rock, Arkansas, before arriving at WENN radio in 1962. He left with most of the WENN staff during the 1976 walk-out protest over the firing of Station Manager Joe Lackey. They took over another station's frequency - 900 AM - and began WATV shortly thereafter in the Cabana Hotel on 2nd Ave North in Birmingham. They were asked to leave the same year and moved to Five Points Ensley Avenue, their current location. Maurice and his wife Lessie married on Dec. 9, 1962 and Lessie King consented to an interview on August 18, 2018 with additional information added on February 6, 2019. Both interviews were conducted over the phone with Lessie at home in Phoenix City, Alabama and Newnan, Georgia. She shares some of her remembrances from her 17 year marriage to Maurice. On the introduction to the two minute audio snippet is WATV announcer Shelley Stewart reflecting on his colleague "Thin Man," on the air for the first broadcast of WATV 900 AM back in 1976, after the WENN "Walkout..
