Ben: There was some kind of legal angle that Johnston left that building down yonder on that Super Highway vacant and didn’t even try to rent it for 4 or 5 years.
Bob- mmhm.
Ben- They said that he made money on it.
Bob- mmhm.
Ben- Some way or another. It..
Bob- he declared a loss or whatever..
Ben- Yeah. The loss was, anyhow, Uh but Gaston is the same way. Mmhm. And
um. They bought an old transmitter from Memphis and um, WQBC the one on
560, It was an old transmitter, shouldn’t have bought it…Claude Gray talked him
into it because he liked it and he thought was the thing to do, he was honest, but
um when um Kirkwood Balton found out it was so big and wouldn’t go in the
building they had it out there and he didn’t want to put up a bigger building. So he
bought a new transmitter. And made the building just a little bit larger. And um
The old transmitter is sitting back there and I knew it was sitting back there and I
knew, I knew some people that had a transmitter lie that…
Bob- mmhm.
Ben- And I thought Well I’m gonna talk Balton to see how much he wants for it.
And uh, cause I knew some people that buy parts.
Bob- sure.
Be- You couldn’t get parts. So I called Balton up and I told him, I said, you got
that old RCA transmitter out there and uh He said yeah it’s out there - had coffins
piled up on top of it - right there in warehouse where the coffins are. And I said, I
tell you what Ill give you 100 dollars for it.</text>

Bob- I walked up to the top of the mountain..
Ben- Oh did you .
Bob- about a week and a half ago. To where the station used to be cause the
tower is still there.
Ben- Yeah. Yeah.
Bob- um but of course, you know and I I Just you know it was like was there
alone, it was a beautiful day and you know you kinda wish that your doing to trip
over a “d”, that fell off the building that was covered by Kudzu, but no such luck.
Ben- Well is there uh, There’s still some equipment in there oh isn’t there part of
it.
Bob- but the building doesn’t exist..
Ben- well the rest of the building it was pretty good sized building, that was built
for TV, uh, I was there when they blasted all that rock off.
Bob- Uhhuh,
Ben- and made a smooth enough place to put building,
Bob- well there’s a building there, I mean you know there’s a building but I just
assumed that um, I just assumed that what ever was WJLD, cause the studio
was up there wasn’t it.
Ben- Everything was there.
Bob- Yeah.
Ben- Studio, office, all was up there…
Bob- But I just assumed that when I had spoke to Frank Giardino, He said no
they bulldozed everything to the ground. It had been vandalized, it sat there for
so long..
Ben- Umm
Bob- um I just assumed that that building that now exists there was just you know
new.
Ben- Some body probably told him that, I don’t think he ever goes up there. It’s
hard to get to, isn’t it?
Bob- Uh Not terribly, I mean you can walk up, ..
Ben- Yeah Well I’m talking about..
Bob- You can’t drive.
Ben- Yeah.
Bob- But you can walk up.
Ben- Yeah well I walked up there, before they put the place there.
Bob- Uhhuh. Uhhuh.
Ben- It was just trees and rocks the first time I went up there.
Bob- yeah. It’s mostly that now. I mean,</text>

Andrew Dawkins: In ’50 and I was there…I went there in ’50, I believe. The station started a little bit before that because I came there in ’50 from a station in Tuscaloosa.
Bob Friedman: Which one?
A: WTBC.
B: TBC.
A: Mmhmm.
B: Was it black formatted?
A: No, what happened, I was in college there and I went there one year and I asked them to run a show there. They turned me down and they chose one of my classmates and he went home for the summer and I ran the show for the summer and as I was running the show for the summer, Mr. Woods from WBCO came, who had heard me, and invited me to Birmingham, which is my home.
B: Uh huh.
A: And so naturally I transferred schools and went to Miles and started working for BCO.
B: Well, now, who is Mr. Woods?
A: Mr. Woods was the manager. He was the manager.
B: Do you remember his first name?
A: Try to remember his first name now…Woods, Woods, Woods. I can’t remember his first name right now.
B: Ok.
A: Slim, tall fellow. Well, not tall but he was a slim fellow about 5’9” but he was a very fine fellow. And Lanier owned it then.
B: Right. Was it true…do you remember if J.L. Doss had a piece of it?
A: J.L. Goss?
B: Doss. You know, the fellas…the family that owned WJLD.
A: No, I don’t think they…Big Jess owned that station alone.
B: Uh huh. Ok.
A: As far as I know only Big Jess owned that station. Big Jess Lenier.
B: Right. Became the mayor.
A: Yes, became the mayor. He was the mayor before he became the mayor.
B: Is that right?
A: Yep. Big Jess was the word in Bessemer, Alabama.
B: Uh huh.
A: Mmhmm.
B: And you were on the site on 17th Street and 3rd Avenue?
A: Yeah, I was there.
B: What was it like? What was the studio like?
A: It was a small studio. We only had the ground floor there. We had a reception area. We had a large studio and then the control room on one side, I guess it would have had to be on the north side of the station. And on the south side was the suite of offices.</text>

How long did it take him to actually go on the air?

AD: He had everything set up in a trailer before we went to Huntsville and we worked maybe six weeks in Huntsville putting that trailer up, digging it in and putting up net wiring and all that, one of Mr. Ben’s nephews or somebody, Cyril Brenner, was good in engineering. Cyril came down and helped Leroy do the final work on the transmitter…most of it Leroy did himself.

BF: Wow. And that engineer’s name was Cyril Brenner?

AD: Brennen, Brennen, Cyril Brennen.

BF: Cyril Brennen, and he was related to the owner of VOK or what was his connection?

AD: He was related to the owner of VOK, WV…WVOK and also the guy who owned a country and western (could be Country Wrestling also) in Montgomery, Alabama.

BF: Ok.

AD: Very good engineer.

BF: Yeah.

AD: And Cyril got word that he was supposed to go on the air… and they had to do a test run so one night in the early… in late February we got the order we could run test run until 12 midnight. And we did that and we heard as far as Chicago, Illinois. Shelley and I were the only two on the air. That’s where we got our, people first started listening to us.

BF: What were you playing?

AD: Playing rhythm blues playing gospel just whatever we wanted to play at the time and… no commercials at all.

BF: Wow.

AD: Test just a test running.

BF: What frequency was it?

The station went all black staff in late 1951 and it was remarked locally that BCO actually meant “became colored overnight.” Andrew speaks about his early history, including moving to Huntsville in 1958 to help Leroy Garrett start WEUP AM. Leroy Garrett was the first African American to own a radio station in Alabama. Andrew left radio in 1970 and started a newspaper, “The Huntsvillian,” and later became a minister in Montgomery.</text>

Bob Friedman: Um, so ..so..what did this machine do?

Manuel Fitch: That machine would ...just play music. Somethin’ like...what we got now… the...satellite.

BF: Mhm

MF: It played music and...you would come in and...maybe talk like you...maybe a minute or so to present the music.

BF: Mhm

MF: And rest of it, you didn't have to worry about bringin’ no music. It was… everything was programmed. Pre-programmed.

BF: But you had to put music on that tape didn't you?

MF: Oh yeah those tapes...they already had them made up

BF: Who made ‘em?

MF: A guy named Tony. Big, large guy. He was ‘bout four, five hundered pounds...

BF: He worked at JLD?

MF: Worked at JLD. Matter of fact, he worked at the company in Florida where the machine was originated from.

BF: and he brought the tapes already made?

MF: He made ‘em up

BF: Here at JLD?

MF: Yeah he made some of ‘em up before he got here. Cause he was, ya know, makin’ old music up...

BF: Mhm

MF: And sent ‘em out to other...Black radio stations. And he came in and he then he just program everything.

BF: You gonna say somethin’ Mr. Hubbard?

H: There were a lot of tapes…

MF: Mhm

BF: Mhm

MF: Well what he's talkin’ about, there was a program came on on Friday… A fact, another reason I left because they faded my program out with somethin’ that they had a program like...BB King and different artists was singin’...it was just a tape that was used, made with our program. It might have been somethin’ like...Rhythm and Blues program on Saturday mornin’.

BF: Uh huh

MF: And those tapes was pre...made and...they came in through the maill. I don’t think..and all ya had to do is listen at ‘em when they end and put in your commercial. Matter of fact, like I said I did it for a while and I got tired of doin’ that and I so I told Tony that I was tired of that.

BF: Mhm

MF: So he told me. He said, “well if the program don’t do no good, we gonna give it to someone else." And he did I left </text>

Ophelia: Well, he’s an old timer…Walter Anglin
Bob: O yeah…Walter goes back…One thing, he doesn’t remember a whole lot. When you go into the forties you know that, he knows he did some kiddie shows at the Famous Theater….

Don Solomon: out at Legion Field. There was a time when AG Gaston would have, once a year in the summer, a major program in which he featured local quartets from all around the state. And he would bring in one group, one famous group. .. he brought in the Blue Jays. . But the make-up primarily of the program was local groups from all around the state. Whatever they were calling the stadium then – Legion Field – it was all one big thing. It’s not all like it is now… We filled it up. Eating peanuts. Peanuts was a nickel a bag. Wasn’t no popcorn, was peanuts and cold drinks. It cost a quarter to get in the program, but if you had a book with Booker T. Washington Insurance Company, ya got in free. Insurance book, ya understand?

Bob Friedman: Yeah

DS: Anyway, quartets would line up a mile a minute waiting on their chance for the two songs they had.

BF: Did they have a sound system?

DS: Yeah, sound system, it was a big thing…Well, the Heavenly Four won third place in the contest, I think primarily because we were children.

BF: But you haven’t told me how the Titusville Spiritual Five transitioned...

DS: They were called the Titusville Spiritual Five at that program. Ok?

BF: What year is that?

DS: Man are you kidding? Give me a break. I have no idea. But anyway,

BF: must have been ’45 or so…

DS: Anyway, the Titusville Spiritual Five sung at the program. And we won third place. People talk about it now. We sung “The Gospel Train” the way the Golden Gates recorded it. And Monroe, ya see Monroe right over there..he’d come to the mike and say “All Aboard.” (pointing to the picture) that fella right there. Anyway, </text>

James Freeman: I tell you what…uh… EDR was very intriguing for me. You know, at that time, you had the Shelley Stewarts. You know Shelley “the playboy” was very hot, very popular, and you had Walter Anglin, and you had Eddie Castleberry, you know, Wiley Daniels, and then later on you had Rev. S. T. Spencer and Rev. Gatemouth Moore. So, I came around, I thought, some of the greatest announcers I’ve ever been around. So, you see, I didn’t have to go to school. What I did was just sit there…

Bob Friedman - …and learn.

JF - …and learn.

BF – Yeah.

JF – I learned from the pros. So, I thank them for that though.

BF- So now, Eddie Castleberry, we’re in touch with him. He’s up in New York. He left Birmingham in 1955, went down to Washington and then to Florida; WMBM. All these greats that you mentioned… When you were at WEDR, how long were you there for…a couple of years?

JF – A couple of years. About a couple of years.

BF – What I would like you to do if you can is reflect on what it was like at JLD on the mountain. I’m going to ask you later on about BCO and WEDR. What do you remember walking into the building? Was there anything unique about the building or where you went? Did you get a chance to meet Bob Umbach before he left town?

JF – Sure did. I sure did. I sure did. What was so unique about that every Saturday morning I would walk up the hill and walk down the hill.

BF – That long hill.

JF – That long hill. But you know what, during that time that hill wasn’t so long. Walk up the hill and down the hill…I enjoyed that. On Sunday nights you could come out, you could stand, you could look out over the city. It was nice. You know, under the tower it was just beautiful. Sometimes you could go up there and just spread your blanket out and look over…just look over the city. That was what was so unique about JLD. And then plus the fact that JLD was a beautiful building. It was almost a new building when I got there. If two cars try to come down the hill one had to pull over and let the other one down. So, it was unique, you know. And here I am a youngster enjoying that, you know.

BF – Sure. Now, Roy told me as well it was segregated studios when he got there.</text>
