Title A name given to the resource Bessemer City Hall, 1947 Description An account of the resource Box 1 Folder 41: "Box 1 folder 41, which contains 2 pictures from 1947, we believe of Bessemer City Hall first without the addition. It’s hard to believe that this is the same year. I don’t believe it could possibly be the same year but then again I’m not sure. The reason I say that is because the first picture shows the City Hall from its entrance traveling east on 3rd avenue in Bessemer. The second picture shows more construction going west from the general entrance and going north as well, a great deal of construction. We approximated the year because WJLD moved into City Hall in Bessemer in 1945, from ’45 to ’47. It could have just been an expansion to the City Hall. WJLD moved out of City Hall in ’47. So perhaps these pictures are actually earlier than ’47 but we’re going to leave it at ’47 because the finished clock tower and the larger construction would certainly look like the building that we were active in for the period, by 1947. The first picture may be where we were in 1945. Not clear. It has the same reference number, which is not on the picture per say but is placed on the picture before they take the picture of the building. So, a lot of discussion about that. We would put John Broadnax up to play “Beer Barrel Polka”, because Mr. Doss wouldn’t let us play it. BF: He didn’t want you to play polka? BE: He didn’t want the word “beer” mentioned on the station. BF: Oh, I see. BE: And we would put John Broadnax up to it. We could play “Here comes the Navy” which was a “Beer Barrel Polka” with different words. But we could not play the “Beer Barrel Polka”! [laughter] BF: [laughter] And Sadie Mae Patterson, I was told, gave Alex Bradford a shot on the air. BE: Yeah, that’s right! We also had a remote and a little funeral parlor. Oh my gosh! They had been closed for quite some time but the building still existed, and I was able to get up into the old facility with a flashlight and I found these. I was looking for remnants of WBUL because there was very little that we had at the time on the station. There were also remnants of WAQY, which was the Tommy Charles station that succeeded WEDR after they were dark for a while, and then after WAQY, Wacky, they called it, Wacky radio and for good reason… WBUL was formed. These were found inside the station by Bob Friedman when 1220 was still in a building out at 5 Points West on Bessemer Super Highway." We do know that he was with WJLD from ’46 to ‘53 and then moved to WMBM in Miami. Roy Wood Sr. did suggest that the Johnston family owned WMBM as well. We do know that he passes somewhere in North Carolina; it was Asheville, North Carolina, and that may have been in the late 80s or early 90s. There was a story to the effect that Bob Umbach was very attractive to Jane Russell and that she would visit him. I heard that from more than one person although I do not recall who. Also there are pictures of Bob working with A.G. Gaston in the spelling bee contests, which were broadcast on WJLD. We will probably reach those pictures in the early 50s, late 40s, about 1950. This is a promo picture of Bob Umbach which was sent to me I believe by his daughter but I’m not sure. This is when he was at WMBM, this is not at WJLD. This would have been around ‘53 and here he is pouring some milk into, I don’t know what. He’s got a table full of 78s in front of him. Bob Umbach had the Atomic Boogie Hour for 7 years at WJLD. He was a very popular jock, Caucasian, who spent a lot of time in the black community, a lot of time at the Madison Night Spot. Eventually passed away in the mountains of North Carolina, in Asheville, so I’m told. Striking man who we had once been told that Jane Russell had a crush on him and came to visit him. We heard that from a couple of people. I won’t name them cause I’m not sure. You’ll have to contact Jane Russell’s evangelical church to find out. By many of his contemporaries and those that came afterwards, considered the first "race" jock in Birmingham." Bobby Hayden: He was the man who developed, founded the program at Alabama A&M, which is the first of all historical Black colleges in the United States. In two years, Paul White had the largest broadcast hookup – other than Notre Dame – in the United States. BF: Now that’s quite a mouthful. So… BH: He had eleven stations playing in two years. BF: He had… You’re saying that – BH: The first year of broadcasting he broadcasted eight games, home and road. A&M was the first Black college to broadcast a football game – home, road, day, or night in 1959. It was Paul White who led the way, who gathered all the sponsors and all the production. The most unique thing about Paul was at that time he didn’t drive. BF: He didn’t drive. BH: He didn’t own a car, nor could he drive. He’s broadcasting the football at Alabama A&M over two-years span of time – cost him his job at WEUP. He and Garrett fell out over the broadcast about the second year. It was so successful the first year, Woody Anderson was one of his sponsors. Woody Anderson bought in with the idea of giving him an automobile to pay for his time on the air and that created a problem ‘cause Garrett wanted Paul White to sell the car to give him the money. That was his pay for being one of the sponsors of A&M football. He gave Paul a car, then Paul had to learn how to drive. BF: Now Bob, back in the day because I see that it’s obvious that you’re close to Paul from the picture – are you hearing all of these stories from Paul? BH: No. I was part of all the show! Title A name given to the resource Bobby Hayden, Oral History Description An account of the resource Bobby Hayden (b.May 28, 1937) Born in Huntsville, Alabama, Bobby was very active with the sports program at Alabama A&M and worked closely with Paul White (who would become "Tall Paul" in Birmingham at WENN 1320 AM) who would broadcast A&M games on WEUP 1600 AM. Bobby also gave tours later on in life at the Underground Railroad safe house in Huntsville. In 1963, Hayden was one of the first African-American presidential honor guards. He served for Presidents Kennedy and Johnson, along with six other African-Americans who referred to themselves as "The Magnificent Seven.'' In this interview, Bobby talks about his relationship with Paul White and the overcoming of obstacles and racism while pioneering Black radio sports broadcasting. He also speaks of Paul White's relationship with Leroy Garrett, founder and owner of WEUP. Bobby Smith: Yeah, same group that was at Tri-Phi. Went to, uh, Motown. BF: Right. How did the group get together? BS: Well, basically we all went to high school together. BF: Oh, where? BS: In Ferndale, Michigan. BF: Oh, alright. BS: We grew up in the same neighborhood and you know, back at that time groups of our caliber was very popular. BF: Right BS: And so that was really just a past time thing to do. Every street corner you found a group of guys harmonizing on the corner. BF: Did you know other groups from Ferndale? BS: Uh, we had two or three little groups. Yeah. BF: I know that there was an SRC label up out of Ferndale. Uh, that produced The DeeJays. A group called The DeeJays. BS: Uh huh BF: Um, which was...it was the State Recording Company. But it was not the one that was...not the States label from Chicago. BS: Mhm BF: But there was a State Recording Company out of Ferndale, Michigan that had a group on it. BS: Oh BF: It's hard to find, of course. BS: Oh, wow. I wasn’t familiar with that myself. BF: Yeah. From about 1953-54. When did you guys start singing together in high school? BS: Well...we was just playin' around on the corner. BF: Mhm BS: I guess about in the late 50s. BF: Mhm BS: And we... BF: You have any specific.... BS: and Harvey Fuqua and Gwen Gordy about ’59… BF: Right BS: And that's when they formed Tri Phi records. BF: Right BS: And..."That's What Girls Are Made For" was the first record released on that label in 1961. BF: Right. Right. BS: So ...from there...we stay on the Tri-Phi label until '64. Tri-Phi label like, could never really get off the ground. BF: Right BS: After "That's What Girls Are Made For" we had some mediocre stuff. BF: Right BS: But after that, the company merged with Motown. BF: Okay. Just like Harvey merged with Gwen, huh? BS: Yeah, right. So. BF: (laughs) BS: That's how we got to Motown.
