I started around the third grade on the Mr. William Wise Handy, who was the nephew of W.C. Handy. Bob Friedman: Wow FA: …who wrote “The St. Louis Blues” and what I did I, I learned how to play, uh, the little marches and things. And when during the, uh, the Second World War, uh, I was drafted into the Maker Musicians Band, Professor..Whatley, Fess Whatley. BF: 'Fess Whatley FA: And my job, now of course is, I’m the director of the education division of the Jazz Hall of Fame. And we have a wonderful person there. Uh, Mr. Ricardo Morris, who is the executive director and it, it goes to say that, uh, history, uh sorta comes together when, you know, that in, in, in Birmingham. Uh, they, uh, so many music teachers involved in fact. BF: Uh huh FA: Birmingham has many...music, more music teachers teaching choral and band music than, anybody, any other system. BF: Is that right? FA: And they've always had that. That's because the people of Birmingham have always put their interest in music. BF: Mhm FA: More so than New Orleans and any other system. BF: Mhm FA: So I grew up in, uh, in an environment that was conducive to jazz. And of course as I, I said during that Second World War, Mister Whatley recruited me to his band because all the good musicians were off in the service and... BF: uh huh FA: And, and that's the thing I can tell ya about at the Hall of Fame. But it was a terrific experience, uh, playing at, at Mr. Whatley's band. BF: What year was that? FA: This was in the ‘40s. This was, … I finished high school. BF: You're not, you're not 20 years old yet and you're... FA: Oh, well. I mean, yeah. I was. This, in Whatley’s band.. I must've been 14, 15 years old. BF: Oh my goodness. FA: Yeah. Well known for his proficiency as a sax and clarinet player, and for his stints with Duke Ellington and Sun Ra’s bands, Dr. Adams taught music in the Birmingham school system for nearly 40 years. So he doesn't really seem like the kinda guy you would, you would hire for this sort of job. Bob Friedman: And he was a petty stick up man too and robbed some banks and did some burglaries and that kinda thing. HS: That was his MO mainly. Some fraud, some stick ups, armed robbery of grocery stores, and ya know, after he and also- ya know, he was a bit of an escape artist. He escaped from this maximum security prison in Missouri and was on the land for about a year before the assassination. Getting in to all kinds of thing like smuggling and fencing schemes and he says he was doing some gun running. He dabbled with porno. He wanted to because a porn director- livin’ out in Los Angeles. He also took dancing lessons. He graduated from a bartending school. He got into hypnosis. He got a nose job about a month before the assassination. So, ya know, there were a lot of weird things going on in his life in the month leading up to April 4th- BF: But he's also a white separatist- he's also enamored with George Wallace's presidential campaign, right? HS: Absolutely. Ya know, even though he's livin’ out in Los Angeles, he's got an ID from Alabama, he's got a car that he purchased right there in Birmingham. And he's working for the Wallace campaign as a volunteer. And writing letters to Rhodesia trying to figure out how he can immigrate there. So ya know there's a lot of, ya know, I think it's very common in all across America to talk about "Ray wasn't a racist." Well, ya know, evidence is very much to the contrary. He was a racist. The sweetest gal in town.” Bob Friedman: Now when was your air shift at WBCO? H: You mean the time? B: Yeah, when did you go on the air? H: Ok. I went on the air, I think, about 11. Right after Erskine’s religious program so I think it was 11. It’s been a long time. I think it was about 11 because I had a program from 11 to 11:15 giving out recipes. B: Uh huh. H: 11:15 until about 12 or 12:30, you know, it was just sounds…music. B: What kind of music did you play? H: Oh, beautiful music, Sarah Vaughn, Billy Eckstine, all the old beautiful songs. B: Uh huh. Mostly jazz artists? H: Sometimes on Sunday, ‘cause I had a long program on Sunday, and I would play-just mix it, you know, but during the weekday, because they would get enough blues after I would get off the air, so I played, you know, sentimental music. B: Mmhmm. Mmhmm. And how did you come to be at BCO? When did you start? Do you remember? H: I can’t remember really. I really can’t. I can’t give you a date, a year. We looking at this paper. 1952. So I had been there a year or maybe longer before that paper came out. B: Mmhmm. H: Mmhmm. B: And you remember William Faush? H: Yes. I started working with William before Erskine came in. B: And you remember other people? Who else was there at the time? H: I can’t remember. I really can’t. I can’t remember anyone but William, and I don’t know. B: Now this paper mentions…How did you get started at BCO? H: William Faush called one night. Made a mistake. Dialed the wrong number, and I answered the phone. And he said “what’s your name” and I told him my name was Willa Lee Davis then. No…yeah, Davis, and he said “ooh, your voice is so pretty. How would you like to work in a radio station?” And I thought he was kidding, because I really had never heard that radio station. B: Uh huh. BF: Mhm MF: It played music and...you would come in and...maybe talk like you...maybe a minute or so to present the music. BF: Mhm MF: And rest of it, you didn't have to worry about bringin’ no music. It was… everything was programmed. Pre-programmed. BF: But you had to put music on that tape didn't you? MF: Oh yeah those tapes...they already had them made up BF: Who made ‘em? MF: A guy named Tony. Big, large guy. He was ‘bout four, five hundered pounds... BF: He worked at JLD? MF: Worked at JLD. Matter of fact, he worked at the company in Florida where the machine was originated from. BF: and he brought the tapes already made? MF: He made ‘em up BF: Here at JLD? MF: Yeah he made some of ‘em up before he got here. Cause he was, ya know, makin’ old music up... BF: Mhm MF: And sent ‘em out to other...Black radio stations. And he came in and he then he just program everything. BF: You gonna say somethin’ Mr. Hubbard? H: There were a lot of tapes… MF: Mhm BF: Mhm MF: Well what he's talkin’ about, there was a program came on on Friday… A fact, another reason I left because they faded my program out with somethin’ that they had a program like...BB King and different artists was singin’...it was just a tape that was used, made with our program. It might have been somethin’ like...Rhythm and Blues program on Saturday mornin’. BF: Uh huh MF: And those tapes was pre...made and...they came in through the maill. I don’t think..and all ya had to do is listen at ‘em when they end and put in your commercial. Matter of fact, like I said I did it for a while and I got tired of doin’ that and I so I told Tony that I was tired of that. BF: Mhm MF: So he told me. He said, “well if the program don’t do no good, we gonna give it to someone else." There was a time when AG Gaston would have, once a year in the summer, a major program in which he featured local quartets from all around the state. And he would bring in one group, one famous group. .. he brought in the Blue Jays. . But the make-up primarily of the program was local groups from all around the state. Whatever they were calling the stadium then – Legion Field – it was all one big thing. It’s not all like it is now… We filled it up. Eating peanuts. Peanuts was a nickel a bag. Wasn’t no popcorn, was peanuts and cold drinks. It cost a quarter to get in the program, but if you had a book with Booker T. Washington Insurance Company, ya got in free. Insurance book, ya understand? Bob Friedman: Yeah DS: Anyway, quartets would line up a mile a minute waiting on their chance for the two songs they had. BF: Did they have a sound system? DS: Yeah, sound system, it was a big thing…Well, the Heavenly Four won third place in the contest, I think primarily because we were children. BF: But you haven’t told me how the Titusville Spiritual Five transitioned... DS: They were called the Titusville Spiritual Five at that program. Ok? BF: What year is that? DS: Man are you kidding? Give me a break. I have no idea. But anyway, BF: must have been ’45 or so… DS: Anyway, the Titusville Spiritual Five sung at the program. And we won third place. People talk about it now. We sung “The Gospel Train” the way the Golden Gates recorded it. And Monroe, ya see Monroe right over there..he’d come to the mike and say “All Aboard.” (pointing to the picture) that fella right there. You know, at that time, you had the Shelley Stewarts. You know Shelley “the playboy” was very hot, very popular, and you had Walter Anglin, and you had Eddie Castleberry, you know, Wiley Daniels, and then later on you had Rev. S. T. Spencer and Rev. Gatemouth Moore. So, I came around, I thought, some of the greatest announcers I’ve ever been around. So, you see, I didn’t have to go to school. What I did was just sit there… Bob Friedman - …and learn. JF - …and learn. BF – Yeah. JF – I learned from the pros. So, I thank them for that though. BF- So now, Eddie Castleberry, we’re in touch with him. He’s up in New York. He left Birmingham in 1955, went down to Washington and then to Florida; WMBM. All these greats that you mentioned… When you were at WEDR, how long were you there for…a couple of years? JF – A couple of years. About a couple of years. BF – What I would like you to do if you can is reflect on what it was like at JLD on the mountain. I’m going to ask you later on about BCO and WEDR. What do you remember walking into the building? Was there anything unique about the building or where you went? Did you get a chance to meet Bob Umbach before he left town? JF – Sure did. I sure did. I sure did. What was so unique about that every Saturday morning I would walk up the hill and walk down the hill. BF – That long hill. JF – That long hill. But you know what, during that time that hill wasn’t so long. Walk up the hill and down the hill…I enjoyed that. On Sunday nights you could come out, you could stand, you could look out over the city. It was nice. You know, under the tower it was just beautiful. Sometimes you could go up there and just spread your blanket out and look over…just look over the city. That was what was so unique about JLD. And then plus the fact that JLD was a beautiful building. It was almost a new building when I got there. If two cars try to come down the hill one had to pull over and let the other one down. So, it was unique, you know. And here I am a youngster enjoying that, you know. BF – Sure. Now, Roy told me as well it was segregated studios when he got there. But he would come out there and...had that hour program and then he got into promotion. In promoting groups coming into Birmingham to the auditorium for these concerts. LK: Right BF: That's remarkable LK: And, um, which a was most unusual thing. BF: Mhm LK: ..back then. BF: Mhm LK: I mean it was borderline. Because normally Black managers and Black promoters did whatever was being done, with the Black people and. BF: Mhm LK: And the White did the other. BF: Mhm LK: And this was a… well I would say the beginning of a breakthrough on a lot of the amalgamation of the two. BF: Yeah. True. LK: I... BF: Umbach? LK: Umbach came to us from Florida. BF: Mhm LK: As I remember BF: I know he went to Florida to go on radio after he left JLD also. LK: Yeah BF: We have some pictures of him at a Florida station. LK: Yeah. And I. I’m almost sure he came from Florida and went back to. BF: Do you remember any story of like Jane Russell, the movie star, coming up to find him? Did you ever hear anything about that? CT: Well, I wouldn't know exactly what happened. BF: Oh you just know what happened after the fight. CT: Yeah, I know that they gave us the name “Drifters” …that was it. BF: Uh huh. Did George Treadwell just call y'all into an office and ask you, "How would ya like to be the new Drifters?" CT: Well he settled it with our manager which was Lover Patterson. BF: Oh Lover Patterson. Okay. Right. Lover Patterson was with The Five Crowns for... CT: Patterson owned The Five Crowns. BF: Yeah. Long was...So he ended up owning the name after the Clark Brothers left and Doc Green just stuck it out. And, how did y'all meet? Because Doc was with the original Five Crowns. CT: Yeah BF: And then, you guys... CT: “Beary” Hobbs was with The Five Crowns. BF: Who? Elsbeary? CT: Yep. BF: Really? When did he? Was he? Did he cut anything with them? CT: Yep. April 7, 1937, Lynchburg, Virginia) a singer with a couple of different versions of the “Drifters” vocal group, recording with the group from 1958 to the present and with a recording history going back to 1957 as the lead of Crowns, a New York City based vocal group, itself with roots to 1952. Charlie reflects on his early singing career. In the early 2000’s, Charlie was known to show up at bogus Drifters events and chase them off the stage for using the name illegally.
