Transcription Any written text transcribed from a sound Transcript of audio snippet: Jesse Champion- I think what really helped the black stations was the fact that people like Bobby Blue Band, Junior Parker, BB King and all would come to the Madison Night Spot, the Grand Terrace and that's where the blacks would go for dances. Bob Friedman- Where was the Grand Terrace? JC- It was out on Highway 78. It's on down past Food World, Food Fair they call it now. BF- you mean going north towards Memphis. JC-No, going west. BF- going west out toward Memphis. JC- yeah yeah that’s right. It was on the right hand side of the highway. BF-Is the building still there? JC- No It’s been torn down. BF- Unhuh. JC- because he had cabins that he would rent out as well and he was.. he was tight with Bull Connor, he was one of the few places that could open on Sunday night and have big affairs and sell booze. BF- Unhuh. What was his name? JC- Foots Shelton. BF- Foots Shelton and he owned the Grand Terrace. JC- He owned the Grand Terrace and then there was a Madison Night Spot on the Bessemer Super Highway. BF- We got a picture of it. JC- Have you? BF- Yeah. JC- They still got the cabin standing out there. BF- Yeah. JC- A few of them anyway because when they had the big fire, it destroyed everything. But all the club dance, they had a whole lot of social and savings clubs have their dances at these places. And they would hear these artists. And on the Radio we would play there Records. BF- I had heard that um that we did remote broadcast from these places. JC- We did. That’s true. BF- How did we do it, we hook it up to the phone lines? JC- Yeah, Yeah that was it, hooked up to the phone lines. BF- God. Did you do it , you told me that you did, again.. JC- I did some of the remotes from some of the churches. BF- Yeah. JC- Bishop Roby’s was my Sunday morning church. BF- So you would basically hook it up? JC-No. BF- Well Actually. JC- The engineer would hook it up you know like the day before and everything was in readiness.. BF- And how, what would you do? JC- And would check in with the station, check in with the station well read the commercials. BF- oh ok. JC- You know for the people who sponsored it. BF- Oh I see. We signed off at the hotel …signed on the next morning out there…been there ever since ’76. Bob: umm JL: But you know it’s been a lot of fun… a lot of umm… during the 60’s it was kind of rough we were right there in the middle of it and it was a lot of activity and the night that they bombed the hotel umm… the blast shattered our front window because you know we had that fish bowl thing Bob: umm hmm JL: all of our Bob: Was that on facing 5th Avenue? JL: Yeah Bob: the fish bowl JL: the glass went… umm nobody touched the building the only thing we had a flood light on the parking lot in the back and they broke that out so they put it in the dark and they broke in the whiskey store and cleaned the whiskey store out…didn’t touch our building. And I was at home on the telephone, Paul White was in the studio giving me a blow by blow description of what was happening… next thing I knew the phone went dead. Cops had come and jerked him out… thought he had broke in. It took me ‘til 4o’clock the next afternoon to find out where he was and get him out of jail cause they had just hauled him off Bob: Umm hmm JL: and when I finally found out where he was and get someone to talk to him and get him out, it was about 4 oclock Sunday afternoon we got him out. It happened on a Friday night I think, best I remember, and uh but you know Monday morning when I came back … Bob: That’s when they blew up the Gaston Motel? See history is a science and if you don’t have history and sociological science you can’t make things happen. So what we first need to do is really go back and extract the science out of the 60s. And what I mean by that. Let’s take the Wright Brothers. You see this Kitty Hawk flying, right? Well something scientific is going on. So you need to find out exactly what these Wright Brothers are doing, so you can replicate it. What they’re doing has nothing to do with their personality; it has to do with science. So what was going on in the 60s had nothing to do with our personalities…now we’re not some magnetic, charismatic, angelic guys. No, we’re some American citizens who discovered that the American constitutional democratic process actually works. That’s what we discovered. But it takes the courage and the honesty to make it work. So we said “Ok, it looks like you’re going to lose your life every time, but you’ve gotta be honest and sincere about what you’re doing, then do it.” So you have to learn that science. Now, then once you learn the science, then we can apply it to the whole question of education. Now let me go back to the sociological science. These guys said – see America is built on a science – now the guys who put the science together signed off on it, saying “We give our lives, our fortune, and our sacred honor.” That’s a total commitment to the idea. Most people don’t want to give that much, but you’d have to say “Wait a minute; we must educate our children. And to this end I give my life, my fortune, and sacred honor.” Now you gotta understand, in America, when you have self-governance you don’t have a king and you don’t have a dictator, the citizens are the authority. So Householder, comes in about 8:30 and I said I guess you had a big laugh this morning telling me that you are Bill Dean from WIBC Indianapolis a Mutual Broadcasting System, and offering me a better job. He says, he is in town! We were out last night until about 2 o’clock in the morning. What time did he call you. And I told him. And he says well yeah, he is here making arrangements for us to carry the Indianapolis speedway race which comes up on labor..on Memorial day. And so I said well he invited me to the Mishawaka Hotel to talk. And he said well go ahead and get you a free breakfast. You know, that is what he said. So I went, and uhh when I knocked on the door he says come in the door is open. So I opened the door and stepped into the door and Mr. Dean must have changed colors of red quicker than you can say “Hello, Mr. Dean,” you know. And then he, regained his composure, And he says, “I’m sorry I had no idea that you were a negro.” I said well Mr. Dean, negro or not you and I had a breakfast engagement and I’m hungry. So he says, So we do, do you want to go downstairs to the dining room or shall we dine up here where we an talk. I said well maybe if we went to Indianapolis, we could go downstairs to the dining room, but we can’t do that in Mishawaka. I said the White House hamburger joint, that is sitting right next to this hotel, do you know I have to go to the side window to get a hamburger? He says what? He says they passed a law last year prohibiting discrimination in places, in public places. He says the state legislation. I said well they haven’t gotten the word here, yet. I know he threw the wire down when he wrapped the wire around the ground wire, dropped in down the underground stream…the FCC came in about 2 weeks, was howling, you know, flashing and everything. BF – Is that right LD – In the South all 1400, you know…that lasted maybe about 2 or 3 weeks. That had some power to it! We’d get cards from all over the world. Those ham operators. Had a hell of a signal. That lasted about 2 or 3 weeks. BF – That’s a great story. I’m going to have to ‘raz’ Ben…I’m going to see Ben on Saturday. LD – They named the station up here when they first started out WMFO, “We May Fizzle Out” BF – “We May Fizzle Out” LD – The history of that thing is my uncle went to California back in the depths of the depression and to work for Fairbanks Radio selling radios…Fairbanks Morris. And came home one Christmas and told Daddy thought make some money on the other end of it and…so uh…they got…scrapped some money together…got some folks…pulled some strings and got a permit and got it on air with a home made, a man named Jimmy Codle… homemade 100-watt transmitter to get on the air with BF – Wow LD – And then went up to 250 and then at that point, when they sold it to Mutual Savings BF – Sold it to who? LD – Mutual Savings Life Insurance. They changed it to WMSL. I guess it’s still on the air. I don’t whether it’s got the same call letters or not. He did not have a track record as an elected official but he had track record as an activist and advocate for our issues. The electability question was the thing that loomed large in ADC but one of the things I did then as state field director I polled our members our leaders from round the state because I said to Joe Reed at least we need to find out what people are thinking before we go to the convention and I polled our delegation our members around the state and the majority of them members who found Jesse Jackson acceptable did not think he was electable in 1984 and pretty much that’s how it split out you know in the vote but at least people at the opportunity to discuss and debate and the decision before the recommendation was made to endorse Mondale but even though we took the position that we would support Mondale because of his acceptability and what we thought then was his electability and track record. Mondale only carried one state in 84’, Minnesota and he carried Washington, DC the District of Columbia so Jesse couldn’t have done much worse than Mondale did.. Bob Friedman: How’d.. JG: Even though Mondale had been the Vice President.. B: How about that.. JG: Since that time the Alabama Democratic Conference has supported other candidates for President.. B: Did they support.. JG: Al Gore.. B: Reverend Jackson.. JG: John Kerry, Michael Dukakis. They all lost. B: Yeah did they support Reverend Jackson in 88’? JG: We did support Reverend Jackson in 88’. But I was mentioning the fact that the others we had supported other white candidates since 84’ who did not win but we did support Jesse Jackson in 88’ as an organization and he ran well in the south but he did not win nationwide but the thing that got my attention was Barack Obama. The first quarter after he announced his candidacy. He raised more money in one quarter than Jesse Jackson raised during his whole run for President. And so that got my attention when I saw how competitive was right out of the block against the Clintons. And you, when you got WBCO, um in what you said around 1950 you say. David Shears- ’51. BF- ’51? DS- Yes. BF- what brought you there? How come you went there? DS- Well first of all I had a been involved with band called the Original Jazz Kings. BF- OK. DS- And, um, Bob Umbach was at WJLD. BF- Right. DS- Uh he was the only station in the vicinity that played black music other than Hoss Allen out of Nashville, Tennessee. And, you know anytime you got some music, you had to get it out of Nashville or WJLD. You know WJLD was on the Bessemer Super Highway at that time and Bob Umbach was the disc jockey that was playing, um, black music. BF- Right. DS- So I went to WBCO and taken a course in radio in radio under Bruce Payne BF- So Bruce was there already? DS- Yeah Bruce Payne was already there when I got there, but we had uh, see Larry McKinley and Bill Williams was the first two who came there, then we had Fletcher Cobb? And uh Erskine Faush And William Faush. Erskine did a religious program. And William Faush did a night religious program. BF- Do you remember Gar Grace? DS- Garfield Grace? BF- Yeah. Ds- Yeah I remember him. He was a young boy at that time, bout a maybe 15 or 16 year old . BF- He had his own show though? DS- Yeah he did, about fifteen minutes every afternoon. BF- Unhuh. DS- He played just, He played.. what kind of music did he play? DS- Well back at that time wasn’t anything he could play, but rock n roll and blues you know, wasn’t any rap like there is now. BF- Of course not. But um, would he play the Five Keys and the Dominos? DS- Well he played um, Hank Ballard and the Midnighters and Annie… BF- .. The Royals? DS- Yeah, um, um played um, a variety of music. BF- Diana Washington, but it was all black? DS- Well yes yes. BF- It was Jazz and RnB?
