Bob Friedman: 1953. Where’d you start?
Sonrose Rutledge: WBCO in Bessemer, Alabama.
B: Really? Were you there in 1953?
S: Yeah. Uh huh.
B: Were you doing part time or full time?
S: Well, actually, my first job for pay was in ’55, but I was there as a DJ representing my high school.
B: Oh really?
S: Right.
B: Which high school?
S: Huh? Johnny Jive as a matter of fact started it.
B: Johnny Jive started it?
S: Mmhmm. Johnny McClure. Johnny Jive started it and there was guest DJs from all the schools and I represented my school, Westville high school.
B: Well…Westville?
S: Uh huh. Westville High.
B: Did they change the name?
S: No. As a matter of fact, the school is not there anymore.
B: Oh ok. The reason I’m kind of surprised that you’re the second person of the week who I’ve talked to who’s been a high school representative at BCO. The other person who’s still working here is Al Bell.
S: Al Bell, yeah.
B: Who came from Western Olin as a high school DJ.
S: Right. Right.
B: A little bit later than that, but…
S: That’s when mine kicked off and when I finished high school, I got my first job there in radio at WBCO.
B: Uh huh. In 1955, was it?
S: In 1955, ‘56, somewhere in there.
B: Uh huh, so it was closing in on the time BCO would change to WENN.
S: Say that again.
B: It was closing in on the time that WBCO would change its frequency and its name to WENN.
S: Yeah, as a matter of fact, they changed from WBCO to WENN.
B: While you were there?
S: No, no, this was … When it moved from Bessemer…
B: Mmhmm.
S: And went to Birmingham, that’s when they changed to WENN, and I don’t remember the year.
B: That was about ’58.</text>

Roy Wood: ...He says uhh how much money you making now, and I said, ohh Im making 50 dollars a week, which is too little money, but it was big money then. So uhh he says, how would you like to make more money. I said I would be interested in that. He says, when is your of duty over. I said at 9 o’clock in the morning? He says well when you get through, come to the Mishawaka Hotel and ask for Bill Dean, I’m in room 423. I said, well ok. I though it was Ronny Householder cause always playing tricks on me, you know. So Householder, comes in about 8:30 and I said I guess you had a big laugh this morning telling me that you are Bill Dean from WIBC Indianapolis a Mutual Broadcasting System, and offering me a better job. He says, he is in town! We were out last night until about 2 o’clock in the morning. What time did he call you. And I told him. And he says well yeah, he is here making arrangements for us to carry the Indianapolis speedway race which comes up on labor..on Memorial day. And so I said well he invited me to the Mishawaka Hotel to talk. And he said well go ahead and get you a free breakfast. You know, that is what he said. So I went, and uhh when I knocked on the door he says come in the door is open. So I opened the door and stepped into the door and Mr. Dean must have changed colors of red quicker than you can say “Hello, Mr. Dean,” you know. And then he, regained his composure, And he says, “I’m sorry I had no idea that you were a negro.” I said well Mr. Dean, negro or not you and I had a breakfast engagement and I’m hungry. So he says, So we do, do you want to go downstairs to the dining room or shall we dine up here where we an talk. I said well maybe if we went to Indianapolis, we could go downstairs to the dining room, but we can’t do that in Mishawaka. I said the White House hamburger joint, that is sitting right next to this hotel, do you know I have to go to the side window to get a hamburger? He says what? He says they passed a law last year prohibiting discrimination in places, in public places. He says the state legislation. I said well they haven’t gotten the word here, yet. </text>

Bob Friedman- Ben Franklin’s got a picture of himself in front of the old transmitter.

Leslie Doss – Had a little house…in a little house…in a little bitty white house. I know he threw the wire down when he wrapped the wire around the ground wire, dropped in down the underground stream…the FCC came in about 2 weeks, was howling, you know, flashing and everything.

BF – Is that right

LD – In the South all 1400, you know…that lasted maybe about 2 or 3 weeks. That had some power to it! We’d get cards from all over the world. Those ham operators. Had a hell of a signal. That lasted about 2 or 3 weeks.

BF – That’s a great story. I’m going to have to ‘raz’ Ben…I’m going to see Ben on Saturday.

LD – They named the station up here when they first started out WMFO, “We May Fizzle Out”

BF – “We May Fizzle Out”

LD – The history of that thing is my uncle went to California back in the depths of the depression and to work for Fairbanks Radio selling radios…Fairbanks Morris. And came home one Christmas and told Daddy thought make some money on the other end of it and…so uh…they got…scrapped some money together…got some folks…pulled some strings and got a permit and got it on air with a home made, a man named Jimmy Codle… homemade 100-watt transmitter to get on the air with

BF – Wow

LD – And then went up to 250 and then at that point, when they sold it to Mutual Savings

BF – Sold it to who?

LD – Mutual Savings Life Insurance. They changed it to WMSL. I guess it’s still on the air. I don’t whether it’s got the same call letters or not.</text>

Jerome Gray: ...Well in 84’ no question Jesse Jackson was acceptable. He did not have a track record as an elected official but he had track record as an activist and advocate for our issues. The electability question was the thing that loomed large in ADC but one of the things I did then as state field director I polled our members our leaders from round the state because I said to Joe Reed at least we need to find out what people are thinking before we go to the convention and I polled our delegation our members around the state and the majority of them members who found Jesse Jackson acceptable did not think he was electable in 1984 and pretty much that’s how it split out you know in the vote but at least people at the opportunity to discuss and debate and the decision before the recommendation was made to endorse Mondale but even though we took the position that we would support Mondale because of his acceptability and what we thought then was his electability and track record. Mondale only carried one state in 84’, Minnesota and he carried Washington, DC the District of Columbia so Jesse couldn’t have done much worse than Mondale did..

Bob Friedman: How’d..

JG: Even though Mondale had been the Vice President..

B: How about that..

JG: Since that time the Alabama Democratic Conference has supported other candidates for President..

B: Did they support..

JG: Al Gore..

B: Reverend Jackson..

JG: John Kerry, Michael Dukakis. They all lost.

B: Yeah did they support Reverend Jackson in 88’?

JG: We did support Reverend Jackson in 88’. But I was mentioning the fact that the others we had supported other white candidates since 84’ who did not win but we did support Jesse Jackson in 88’ as an organization and he ran well in the south but he did not win nationwide but the thing that got my attention was Barack Obama. The first quarter after he announced his candidacy. He raised more money in one quarter than Jesse Jackson raised during his whole run for President. And so that got my attention when I saw how competitive was right out of the block against the Clintons. </text>

Bob: Do you remember any about the jewelry store’s relationship to programming on WJLD?

Alex: No, Taft did a lot of advertising. He was eh, he did a lot of charity work. He was always on, I don’t know what station he was on, but he did a lot of advertising.

Bob: Right, well, from our, from people who remember, one of the things he did was sponsor W.A. Clark from the St. Peter’s Primitive Church in Bessemer on WJLD around 1944-1945.

Alex: And every Easter, he had a big Easter Egg Hunt out there in Fair Park, that’s my remembrance.

Bob: Eh ha, is there. They wouldn’t be. I guess what I’m looking for as well is any memorabilia that would connect Epps Jewelers to anything that happened on WJLD?

Alex: No, I that I don’t know. It’s been about 12 years since Taft has passed away and I don’t know of anything that is left from Epps Jewelry and before that he had a clothing store in town before he opened up Epps Jewelry, in the old Hammond Hotel. Are you from Birmingham?

Bob: No, I’m from New York actually.

Alex: Oh, so, I don’t know of any place that you can get any…He was also a sponsor of the wrestling matches at the City Auditorium. He and a fella, Danaberg, sponsored those wrestling matches.

Bob: Hmmmm

Alex: He was very friendly with…like you say, I forget which church it was… out there in Bessemer, he contributed to them quite a bit.

Bob: Do you remember a name Deacon Richmond Davis?

Alex: That sounds about right. That’s him. I think he’s passed away.

Bob: uh huh

Alex: Deacon Richmond David, that’s exactly right. Deacon Davis sponsored every year at Fair Park an Easter Egg Hunt and things of that nature.

Bob: Ah eh, I see.</text>

Bob Friedman- Ok. And you, when you got WBCO, um in what you said around 1950 you say.

David Shears- ’51.

BF- ’51?

DS- Yes.

BF- what brought you there? How come you went there?

DS- Well first of all I had a been involved with band called the Original Jazz Kings.

BF- OK.

DS- And, um, Bob Umbach was at WJLD.

BF- Right.

DS- Uh he was the only station in the vicinity that played black music other than Hoss Allen out of Nashville, Tennessee. And, you know anytime you got some music, you had to get it out of Nashville or WJLD. You know WJLD was on the Bessemer Super Highway at that time and Bob Umbach was the disc jockey that was playing, um, black music.

BF- Right.

DS- So I went to WBCO and taken a course in radio in radio under Bruce Payne

BF- So Bruce was there already?

DS- Yeah Bruce Payne was already there when I got there, but we had uh, see Larry McKinley and Bill Williams was the first two who came there, then we had Fletcher Cobb? And uh Erskine Faush And William Faush. Erskine did a religious program. And William Faush did a night religious program.

BF- Do you remember Gar Grace?

DS- Garfield Grace?

BF- Yeah.

Ds- Yeah I remember him. He was a young boy at that time, bout a maybe 15 or 16 year old .

BF- He had his own show though?

DS- Yeah he did, about fifteen minutes every afternoon.

BF- Unhuh.

DS- He played just, He played.. what kind of music did he play?

DS- Well back at that time wasn’t anything he could play, but rock n roll and blues you know, wasn’t any rap like there is now.

BF- Of course not. But um, would he play the Five Keys and the Dominos?

DS- Well he played um, Hank Ballard and the Midnighters and Annie…

BF- .. The Royals?

DS- Yeah, um, um played um, a variety of music.

BF- Diana Washington, but it was all black?

DS- Well yes yes.

BF- It was Jazz and RnB?

DS- And Yeah well lets go back un….and The Tympany Five, I played that kind of music</text>

Erskine Faush: ... of course all the traditional trappings of life in southern Birmingham, Alabama were there. You had separate restrooms inside. You had separate -

Bob Friedman: In BCO?

E: In everywhere.

B: Everywhere. Sure.

E: What you had was a hallway with a partition down the center of it, and the executive offices if you could consider it that in as much as it was the old Bessemer waterworks building (laughs), and the management offices were on one side…

B: That building doesn’t exist anymore.

E: No. It’s since torn down. It was a little building I think on that corner of…

B: Was it a little park then?

E: No it was the Town Clock Café, was on, directly on the corner which is across the street from the city hall, in fact the Bessemer City Auditorium is still on that corner today. Across the street on the western most corner, was the Town Clock cafeteria. Next door was the building we occupied as a radio station, which was converted from the old Bessemer Waterworks building. Next door to the radio station and this waterworks building was the uh Bessemer general hospital, which no longer exists.

B: Mmhmm. I went down there um just to see and I think I think it’s almost all park now or something it’s all green.

E: That would be a probably a yeah I guess so I don’t know it’s been a long time since I’ve been there but a block aways I think is Debardeleben Park

B: Ok. So, what’s the competition like between WEDR, JLD, and BCO? How are people thinking and talking about you know competing? There’s obviously no rating system.

E: At that time?

B: At that time.

E: Oh yes there was.

B: Oh yes there was, OK.

E: There was the Hooper.

B: Hooper? Ok.

E: Yes. And the Pulse.

B: And the Pulse. And what was that – how did they, what did they do – phone? Phone calls?

E: Uhh, the Hooper ratings I think was um I think it was phone, and some of them used a combined methodology of both uh, they actually had people on the street knocking doors.

B: Wow.

E: Who would go in and sit with people. And talk to them.

B: (laughs) Really?

E: Sure.</text>

AF- Money Man. We had to go all over town, every day, five days a week from 6 o’clock til 9 o’clock.
BF- In the evening?
AF- Morning.
BF- In the morning?
AF- Morning. Yeah. Jimmy was on the Drive Show.
BF- Okay.
AF- And. Uh. He started out at 5. But I didn’t start til 6.
BF- Um hum.
AF- And we’d go from town part…from neighborhood to neighborhood, and we didn’t have the freeway at that time.
BF- Didn’t have what?
AF- The freeway.
BF- Okay.
AF- We had to go the old way. And man, I was…fifteen minutes, I was in one part of town; ten minutes, I was somewhere else. I was right there…
BF- What were you doing?
AF- We was giving out money. Five dollars a whop, as they called it. If I was sitting in front of your house, and tell Jimmy where I am, and call your address, you came out, I would give you a certificate for five dollars.
BF- A certificate for five dollars.
AF- Um hum.
BF- Now how old were you when you started working for WJLD?
AF- Forty, I mean twenty-one… thirty-one years old.
BF- Thirty-one years old?
AF- Um hum.
BF- And. Um. What do you remember about Jimmy?
AF- Jimmy was a hard-hitting man, when it come to radio.
BF- Um hum.
AF- He… Uh… knew his radio.</text>

Billy Evans: We had a man, a Black man, John Broadnax.
Bob Friedman: John Broadnax.
BE: Who was a piano player. He played. He had a 15-minute program once a week and it was on Friday nights for McClure Furniture Company in Bessemer. John came up and played the old piano in the studio.
BF: [laughter]
BE: Every week. Oh, there are 10 million stories you could think of about that crazy radio station.
BF: Tell me that guy’s name again?
BE: John Broadnax.
BF: John Broadnax. B-R-O-A-D-N-A-X.
BF: He played the, there was a piano at the station and he played the piano.
BE: Yeah.
BF: It was a 15-minute show. What kind of music did he play?
BE: He played whatever. Everything from “Pistol Packing Mama” to gospel.
BF: uh-uh.
BE: He’d just get in there and play away. [laughter]
BF: You say somebody sponsored him?
BE: Yeah, McClure Trading company. It was a furniture store in Bessemer.
BF: Mm-hm.
BE: They sponsored him. We would put John Broadnax up to play “Beer Barrel Polka”, because Mr. Doss wouldn’t let us play it.
BF: He didn’t want you to play polka?
BE: He didn’t want the word “beer” mentioned on the station.
BF: Oh, I see.
BE: And we would put John Broadnax up to it. We could play “Here comes the Navy” which was a “Beer Barrel Polka” with different words. But we could not play the “Beer Barrel Polka”! [laughter]
BF: [laughter] And Sadie Mae Patterson, I was told, gave Alex Bradford a shot on the air.
BE: Yeah, that’s right! We also had a remote and a little funeral parlor. Oh my gosh!
BF: Do you remember a little about Sadie? Or John, what they looked like? And God knows, if there are pictures of any of these people?
BE: I doubt that there are. You know, we didn’t make picture then.
BF: Of course, not.
BE: That’s what’s so strange. And I late became a commercial photographer.
BF: Oh really?
BE: Yeah! </text>
