Bob Friedman: I’m glad to hear that. Um, I had a piece of historical information I was trying to determine and I thought you might be of help here. Um, I know you started working at WEDR, right?
Paul 'EX' Brown: My work experience?
B: Your first radio work in Birmingham.
P: Oh no, no. WEDR was way down the list.
B: Really?
P: Yeah. My first radio job was at WJOB at Hammond, Indiana in 1941 or 42.
B: Wow. I remember WJOB when I lived in Gary.
P: Yep.
B: Mmhmm. And what was it a news job?
P: Huh?
B: What kind of work did you do for them?
P: I did a umm…I did a news program on Sunday morning. That’s how I got started and then I starting doing a uhh record program rhythm and blues every-every day.
B: On WJOB?
P: Right.
B: That far back, 1941 and 42, you were doing rhythm and blues?
P: Yes sir. It wasn’t called-it was called race then. It wasn’t called rhythm and blues.
B: Do you remember some of the artists that you would play on the air? What kind of…you know which…
P: Oh uhh…a girl named that was…went to…she’s dead now. Went to…changed from gospel to…changed from, well she was gospel and then changed to race…Cook Name was Cook, and umm and of course there was Lionel Hampton and umm inaudble was all very popular then.
B: Uh huh.
P: Yeah.
B: So it was jazz and swing too huh?
P: Yeah.
B: Mmhmm.
P: Yeah. We had everything race. You know.

Bob Friedman: but it never dawned on us because I mean Lewis was doing the Mayor’s Report every week….

Rick Upshaw: uh huh

Bob: I mean Lewis White’s voice is very well known in Birmingham….

Rick: Oh yeah, yeah

Bob: And so umm, every little inflection every little bit of it uh was like Lewis so that’s why.

Rick: Yeah, because see, I was there when Lew..see we used to simulcast….

Bob: Right…

Rick: With W-E-N-N, with WENN in Birmingham.

Bob: How did he simulcast with WENN?

Rick: Oh very simple. You had a furniture store there that was, ah, I’m trying to think of the name of that thing. They had, we had the same…..

Bob: Mr King?

Rick: Huh?

Bob: King Credit

Rick: No, it wasn’t King Credit, wasn’t Easy Credit, I remember that one but no, this was a furniture store. Ummm…..over there…..(Inaudible)

(Confusing)

Rick: There was this furniture store. And what it was..they..there was a religious, it was on every Sunday morning. If you go back, if you can find those logs. It was this same program, every Sunday morning. I think it came on at 8 o’clock. What we would do is the program would run and then at the same preset time we would cut the program, I would read there commercial, at the same time over at WENN the exact same commercial was being read by another announcer.

Bob: uh huh

Rick: And I could hear him on my headset and he could hear me on his and we always finished up at the same time if not one would slow down and wait for the other then we would go back to the broadcast.

Bob: So, you both, you both stations…..

Rick: Sokol…something like that

Bob: Both stations had eh people at the store?

Rick: No, no

Bob: No….

Rick: We were in the studio.

Bob: Ok

Rick: And the program came live from somewhere….

Bob: Eh hmmm

Rick: I think it was remote but at 10 after the hour we would both stop. The program would stop. We had the cues there….

Bob: Right

Rick: And I would read the commercial and he would read the same commercial.

<text>Rick Upshaw was born and raised in Chattanooga and is a graduate of Howard School. Rick Upshaw was also a talented singer and was quite an expert at piano and organ. He began his musical studies at the Ken Keese Studios in Chattanooga and studied as well in Chicago and New York, and made several recordings for Gospel and Jet Stream Records. After initial radio experience at WNOO in Chattanooga, Rick traveled to Birmingham and WJLD. While at WJLD, he and Lewis White interviewed Rev. Fred Shuttlesworth on the 10th Anniversary of the founding of the Alabama Christian Movement for Human Rights. That recording is also in the Oral History collection. While only at WJLD for the period 1966-1967, in the 1990's Rick supplied us with several 7 inch tape reels from his WJLD days, which included shows from Lewis White and Ed McClure as well as his own. That kind of donation is rare and we are thankful for his contribution.</text>

Bob Friedman: Louisville. That’s what he said. Right. But maybe you could start by just letting us know how you got started in radio. How that actually happened.

William Faush: Well I got really started at WEDR. It was of a short [inaudible]. I just happened to have been there one day talking to a friend of mine whose name eludes me at the moment.

B: Who worked there?

W: Yes.

B: Well I can tell you because I’ve spoken to most of them.

W: Yes.

B: So would it be Ben Alexander? Or Frank Smart? Or Wiley Daniels? Those are some of the earliest. E.X. Brown?

W: It might have been Wiley Daniels.

B: Mmhm. Lived out in Titusville.

W: Yes. It might have been he. Anyway, there was a parade going down 4th Ave. And he’s looking out of the window, describing the parade. And that was enough of that I was standing there with him, he gave me the mic and told me to describe what I saw and I did that and I stayed there for about 5 months. 5 or 6 months. And Jess Lenier (2:12) who was then the mayor I believe of Bessemer converted a hillbilly station there in Bessemer overnight into black radio.

B: Do you know how long it had been hillbilly?

W: No I do not. I would think not too long. But Larry McKenzie out of Chicago and Eddie Castleberry out of New York and myself. We were the 3 who started up WED – I mean WBCO

B: So Eddie Castleberry worked at BCO?

W: That is correct.

Don Solomon: ....So we, we went down the street to WVOK...., was on the same…the Super Highway…and Leroy got us on the WVOK at 7 o’clock on Sunday morning and so we were doing our own thing . Eventually Leroy somehow in his continued efforts with WJLD was there when they began to hook up other radio… so WVOK also they had a radio program coming out of Smith and Gaston at one o’clock at 6th Ave Baptist Church. Leroy then became the engineer, first black engineer. He hooked up a studio downstairs over where he lived in the branch office of the Manhattan Dry Cleaners. On Sunday morning, our program came on, eventually the second group would come on,

Bob Friedman: Over the phone…

DS: No we went live to the studio. We went to WVOK and were followed by the Four Eagles, the next group to come on. They came on but they let them on. So they followed us. We were at WVOK. Eventually Leroy estasblished a studio downstairs where he could, he would be on with little groups with the WVOK. He became the engineer for WVOK Sunday morning sessions with all these quartets. They done latched on to VOK. All of them downstairs…he was called the Blue Goose.

BF: Who gave him that name?

DS: He gave himself that name. The Blue Goose. That’s what he called himself …the Blue Goose.

BF: And did he have the tape recording equipment down there?

DS: Tape recorder down there. Let me tell you about recorder. Leroy thought we oughtta been on recording, the Heavenly Four. so, he couldn’t’ get hooked up with the recording people who make recordings, he bought his own recorder.

              <text>Transcript from audio snippet:

Bob Friedman- We had a woman who came in with a copy of the Birmingham Weekly Review, which was a large size, it was like a Birmingham News, Atlanta Constitution Sized Newspaper.

Ben Alexander- Oh yes.

BF- Black Republican looking Newspaper and had, it had whole spread on WBCO she didn’t even know that her mother, she she was at BCO in 1952 her name was Lora Gary.

BA- Oh.

BF- Became Lora.. actually she was Lora walker and then joined our staff in ‘54 or ’55 and changed her name, got married. But any way, her mother had saved this thing and had laminated it. It was all yellow but she..

BA- Oh.

BF- But she had laminated it so it lived through the years.

BA- Yeah.

BF- And it’s just extraordinary to read, you know, the Dominoes came down to visit and all. It’s like..

BA- Yeah. Yeah.

BF- Great , great stuff. Great stuff.

BA- Yeah, we, we we interviewed uh you know Jackie Robinson, uh uh what’s… I was just thinking about him the other day because there’s uh this other guy that who’s name I’m trying to think about now, but because there’s a play starting here in Virginia about him. Um Louis Jordan.

BF- Unhuh.

BA- And uh, we interviewed him, there were uh you know, Count Basie, Lucky Millinder was a band leader that came there, uh Duke Ellington. They all came and paid a visit to WEDR, whenever they were in town. All, all of the performers came in.

BF- Do you remember anything distinctive about that year besides the bombing of the, well they blew up tower or the transmitter?

BA- It was the transmitter.

BF- Unhuh.

BA- Not the transmitter.. no sorry the tower. Tower.

BF- tower came down. Yeah. Yeah.

BA- But after that I think things sort of cooled down and..

BF- well supposedly in 1958 or so uh somebody had scrawled KKK on the walls of WEDR. And there was a picture of another jock named Shelley Stewart, I don’t know if you’ve ever heard of him.

BA- Yeah that was after my time. Yeah.

Jesse Champion- I think what really helped the black stations was the fact that people like Bobby Blue Band, Junior Parker, BB King and all would come to the Madison Night Spot, the Grand Terrace and that's where the blacks would go for dances.

Bob Friedman- Where was the Grand Terrace?

JC- It was out on Highway 78. It's on down past Food World, Food Fair
they call it now.

BF- you mean going north towards Memphis.

JC-No, going west.

BF- going west out toward Memphis.

JC- yeah yeah that’s right. It was on the right hand side of the highway.

BF-Is the building still there?

JC- No It’s been torn down.

BF- Unhuh.

JC- because he had cabins that he would rent out as well and he was.. he was tight with Bull Connor, he was one of the few places that could open on Sunday night and have big affairs and sell booze.

BF- Unhuh. What was his name?

JC- Foots Shelton.

BF- Foots Shelton and he owned the Grand Terrace.

JC- He owned the Grand Terrace and then there was a Madison Night Spot on the Bessemer Super Highway.

BF- We got a picture of it.

JC- Have you?

BF- Yeah.

JC- They still got the cabin standing out there.

BF- Yeah.

JC- A few of them anyway because when they had the big fire, it destroyed everything. But all the club dance, they had a whole lot of social and savings clubs have their dances at these places. And they would hear these artists. And on the Radio we would play there Records.

BF- I had heard that um that we did remote broadcast from these places.

JC- We did. That’s true.

BF- How did we do it, we hook it up to the phone lines?

JC- Yeah, Yeah that was it, hooked up to the phone lines.

BF- God. Did you do it , you told me that you did, again..

JC- I did some of the remotes from some of the churches.

BF- Yeah.

JC- Bishop Roby’s was my Sunday morning church.

BF- So you would basically hook it up?

JC-No.

BF- Well Actually.

JC- The engineer would hook it up you know like the day before and everything was in readiness..

BF- And how, what would you do?

JC- And would check in with the station, check in with the station well read the commercials.

BF- oh ok.

JC- You know for the people who sponsored it.

BF- Oh I see.

Joe Lackey: Course during that month I was riding the streets looking for a place… found that one in 5 Points West

Bob Friedman: Umm great location…

JL: moved in there and did just little bit of remodeling and uh moved in there and uh we moved overnight. We signed off at the hotel …signed on the next morning out there…been there ever since ’76.

Bob: umm

JL: But you know it’s been a lot of fun… a lot of umm… during the 60’s it was kind of rough we were right there in the middle of it and it was a lot of activity and the night that they bombed the hotel umm… the blast shattered our front window because you know we had that fish bowl thing

Bob: umm hmm

JL: all of our

Bob: Was that on facing 5th Avenue?

JL: Yeah

Bob: the fish bowl

JL: the glass went… umm nobody touched the building the only thing we had a flood light on the parking lot in the back and they broke that out so they put it in the dark and they broke in the whiskey store and cleaned the whiskey store out…didn’t touch our building. And I was at home on the telephone, Paul White was in the studio giving me a blow by blow description of what was happening… next thing I knew the phone went dead. Cops had come and jerked him out…
thought he had broke in. It took me ‘til 4o’clock the next afternoon to find out where he was and get him out of jail cause they had just hauled him off

Bob: Umm hmm

JL: and when I finally found out where he was and get someone to talk to him and get him out, it was about 4 oclock Sunday afternoon we got him out. It happened on a Friday night I think, best I remember, and uh but you know Monday morning when I came back …

Bob: That’s when they blew up the Gaston Motel?

JL: When I came back downtown monday morning …I did not
try to come in on the weekend…I came back in the morning… downtown looked like a war zone

Bob:	So what kind of stuff did you, what artist did you play ?

ZA:	I was playing, I was playing rhythm and blues at the time

Bob:	What artist,, could you?

ZA:	Oh back um BB King, Ray Charles, all old blues, and uh even as go back some of the oldies, I liked Ivory Joe Hunter

Bob:	Did you ever play vocal groups like The Dominoes and The Moonglows ?

ZA:	We use to play some but you know, most at that time most of the younger people like those uh those uh like the Moonglows and the Charms, they were they were like, the the younger set, but I was holdin mine to the older group

Bob:	Isn’t that interesting so now what year are we did you start at WJLD?

ZA:	I started WJLD

Bob:	Ok what year was that? Do you remember?

ZA:	Uh it was in the uh it was in the fifties I cant think it was at the same time King Porter was there, if you can find what year he was there

Bob:	Yeah we’re trying to find a picture of King Porter

ZA:	That’s actually how I got started King Porter I was working behind him we use to broadcast at the Madison night spot

Bob:	The Madison night spot

ZA:	The Madison night spot on Bessemer superhighway

Bob:	Bessemer superhighway which isn’t there anymore

ZA:	It’s not there anymore but then at that time uh King Porter use to broadcast there he also use to broadcast from Bob’s Savoy downtown Birmingham 4th avenue ,and he use to play the piano

Bob:	King Porter played the piano what, what kind of music did king Porter play?

ZA:	He played blues, rhythm and blues

Bob:	Same thing

ZA:	Same thing, same thing and uh, what made it, how I got started I just got interested in going around in radio and listening and King Porter I think he followed, King Porter was there I believe before… I couldn’t think was he there before Roy Wood or after Roy Wood

James Bevel: The first thing that we probably need to do…Bobby D you keep talking about history. See history is a science and if you don’t have history and sociological science you can’t make things happen. So what we first need to do is really go back and extract the science out of the 60s. And what I mean by that. Let’s take the Wright Brothers. You see this Kitty Hawk flying, right? Well something scientific is going on. So you need to find out exactly what these Wright Brothers are doing, so you can replicate it. What they’re doing has nothing to do with their personality; it has to do with science. So what was going on in the 60s had nothing to do with our personalities…now we’re not some magnetic, charismatic, angelic guys. No, we’re some American citizens who discovered that the American constitutional democratic process actually works. That’s what we discovered. But it takes the courage and the honesty to make it work. So we said “Ok, it looks like you’re going to lose your life every time, but you’ve gotta be honest and sincere about what you’re doing, then do it.” So you have to learn that science. Now, then once you learn the science, then we can apply it to the whole question of education. Now let me go back to the sociological science. These guys said – see America is built on a science – now the guys who put the science together signed off on it, saying “We give our lives, our fortune, and our sacred honor.” That’s a total commitment to the idea. Most people don’t want to give that much, but you’d have to say “Wait a minute; we must educate our children. And to this end I give my life, my fortune, and sacred honor.” Now you gotta understand, in America, when you have self-governance you don’t have a king and you don’t have a dictator, the citizens are the authority.</text>
