You know, pitting one group against the other and what have you. And you raised the issue of democracy. How did you come to feel so strongly about the bigger picture? Lani Guinier: Well, I think a number of reasons. One is that I had worked in 1982 on the extension of the Voting Rights Act. I was one of the lawyers working with a big coalition of people. People from the religious community, the Women’s community, the Labor Movement, all of whom were fighting to amend and extend and strengthen the 92, the 82 Voting Rights Act. And it was that process of feeling the power of a coalition working to support the rights of people of color that convinced me that democracy was an important vehicle for fundamental fairness. That we couldn’t do it alone. We’re a minority in most of the country and we’re numerically weak. And so you need allies. And the way to get allies, is to show them how what you are fighting for is right and just, but it’s also good for America. Gary Richardson: You know, we often heard that you were “Quota Queen” and all this stuff. What was it in your writing or in your previous statements that garnered such a label? LG: First of all, I have never supported quotas even though I support democracy and fundamental fairness. I have never supported quotas. I supported something called cumulative voting, which is in fact, in use right now in Chilton County, Alabama and a couple of other places in Alabama.  It’s used by corporations in over 30 states to elect members of their board of directors. It’s a way of protecting minority shareholders... BP: But the Black stations started evolving and the people started swinging towards the Black stations and Black DJs BF: What do you remember of Walter Anglin? Did you know Walter? BP: Yeah. BF: Was he ever at BCO? BP: I don’t recall him being at B… When I met him, he was at JLD. BF: He was at EDR. BP: No, EDR. He eventually wound up at JLD. BF: Right. BP: In fact, Walter Anglin was one of the originals at EDR. BF: That’s right. BP: Along with Eddie Castleberry, I believe BF: Right. BP: He was a little guy. Another thing I remember about him, I went to school with his son at Miles College. Walter Anglin, Jr. BF: Uh-huh. BP: I knew him almost as well as his father, because we had classes together at Miles. BF: Uh-huh. Right. EM: Yeah I was just...no...just as I tried to move my feet off the floor for a minute or split second or two and that was at the Madison Night Spot in ’53 (should have been 55). He said they had made more money at another engagement but this was the largest crowd he had, an assessment, probably had a couple thousand people there that night. BF: It must have been wild. And it was controversial in some ways like Rap Music. Public Enemy and others today aren’t really allowed on the air today, yet their records still sold. How did folks in the community learn about your sides back then when certain stations would never even play the music. Was it word of mouth and then pushing the record store to order from the record company directly? Ruth Brown- Yeah. Well, lots of time, as I said one of the stations that had the most to do with that was the station out of Gallatin, Tennessee called Randy’s Record Shop, who played 90% black music. But in every major city, large or small, wherever there was a black person living, they had in some kind of way a means of hearing the music that belonged to them. There were Juke Boxes. There were people who collected. Sometimes you had to buy the Rhythm & Blues magazines, and order those records. But none the less, the music, itself was not going to be stopped. And that’s why the period in which I came up was so wonderful. Because the artists that did the performing got on a bus or in a car and came to the town. I mean, in the beginning I appreciated y’all saying, ”Well, teach Birmingham who Ruth Brown is.” Birmingham knows who Ruth Brown is. You know. Um…I’ve come here so many times, sang in this particular town so many times, worked out of here for neighboring towns. Because Birmingham, even with all the problems that existed, had the one place that we could all stay comfortably. And that was Gaston’s Motel. A. G. Gaston took care of a lot of hungry performers, you know. Jackie Wilson and Sam Cooke, all us owe him money right now, I betcha, for rent we couldn’t pay. Whites, Judy Howell just love me she said, “I’d never wanted you to call me Miss. Patty Wheeler which is now, Patty and the Doc… Bob Friedman: Who’s Judy Howell? SS: Judy Howell. See her husband’s a engineer at one of these television station in Birmingham. She’s still living. Nice person. They didn’t want that.. they didn’t want me to call.. they wasn’t demanding it. It was the white male Otis Dodge. That transaction changed the course of WJLD’s thinking. Bob Friedman: Uh huh BP: And anything out of this ballpark and anything out of this league, I can’t remember. BF: (laughs) BP: But you want to talk music, I can talk with you. BF: (laughs) Yeah. BP: (laughs)...Oh yeah, man. It’s just great. Another thing too I would like to talk a little more about Jimmy Ricks. BF: Yeah BP: And even though the late Jimmy Ricks now. BF: Yeah BP: I want to give thanks to him because if it wasn’t for him, I wouldn't have done “White Christmas” the way I did. BF: Mhm, mhm. BP: Yeah, I've heard so many things from Jimmy Ricks. “Green Eyes”, “Wagon Wheels”, “Old Man River”, you know… BF: Just never stopped. Endless supply of stuff. BP: Oh, yeah BF: “Don’t Mention.” Then those unbelievable tenors and that progressive harmony The Ravens had. Boy, “Don’t Mention My Name”, “Begin the Beguine”… BP: The Tenors sang it. Maithe Marshall. BF: Maithe Marshall BP: Well, yeah. BF:Joe Van Loan... BP: He was in before Van Loan. That came later BF: Yeah, yeah. BP: Joe and Jim was there, but The Ravens…. BF: They had the Marshall brothers actually put out a record. BP: Yeah BF: Yeah, that was really something. Really unbelievable. BP: Yeah BF: And Pioneers BP: Yeah BF: There were other...while I was collecting…. BP: Well, the guy that sang bass in The Drifters after I left, uh, in 57, was from The Ravens. He took Jimmy Ricks place. When Jimmy went solo, his name was Tommy Evans. He’s this guy here. (shows picture) BF: Is he on it? BP: Yeah, that’s him there. BF: No, that’s one of the Thrashers. BP: Oh, that’s one of the Thrashers. BF: Tommy… BP: That’s a Thrasher in the middle, that’s Tommy Evans right there. BF: Oh, I thought these guys were brothers. BP: No, no, no. BF: So there’s only one Thrasher in here. BP: There’s only one Thrasher in that picture. BF: Yeah BP: The other Thrashers on the original picture BF: Yeah BP: The second group of Drifters. Charles Brown: yeah, right. BF: And then there was another, there was another one with a group, I think it was called “The Syncopators” something along those lines. Do you remember who were those groups? Who those people were? CB: You know what, they chose them from some church. I aint never know them. Cause we did it that night. “My Silent Love” and that’s the only one they put out, we did one more. BF: yeah CB: cause that was the only one that they put out. BF: They just brought a backup group from the church. Where did, where, like would they have gotten them from L.A. where Aladdin was? CB: Yeah, it was, it was in L.A. you see cause I didn’t have any control. Maxwell Davis was the A&R man so he decided with this “Let’s Walk” and “Everybody’s Got Trouble” and “My Silent Love.” BF: Yeah, yeah CB: Yeah BF: Yeah, In the in the Living Blues article that you did in 1976, which I’m going to give you a copy of, uh this has great information, you did a wonderful interview, I figured well maybe you might have forgotten a few things and you might want to refresh your memory. CB: Well the truth is already, already there BF: Yeah the truth is there but you may want it back just to see again CB: yeah BF: Um you make mention that you came to Birmingham in nineteen forty-nine and there was a white disc jockey from a radio station that got you into the you say the Birmingham Theater and uh I have the article from when you were at the Birmingham, at the Boutwell here. EH: Let’s see, how many is that..Odessa, Mildred, Vera, Willie May Thomas, she’s gone, she passed. She married Newbury, who was a Black Baron, a baseball player. You ever heard of him? BF: What was his first name? EH: Jimmy BF: Jimmy Newbury EH: Ok so how many, so then there was Evelyn so that made five. That was the original Gospel Harmonettes. Dorothy Love Coates later joined the group about five or six years later. BF: So did that original group record? EH: Yes we sang and recorded. We recorded with RCA BF: With RCA? Under the name the Gospel Harmonettes? So that means there should be 78’s. EH: I have some BF: You need to let us take pictures of them, or I’ll visit you. Because I know how 78’s are. I have a bunch myself. So that’s great. I don’t think anybody, now I would love to record them, record them and clean them up and put them on a cd for you. I would love to do that. We recently…Gatemouth Moore. EH: I remember him. BF: He started out in blues in the 40’s and he shifted to Gospel in the early 50’s . He was at EDR and WJLD. And we have a 78 of his blues work in the 1940’s and just recently, here in Birmingham, got a Chess 78 of him singing “Thank You Jesus” so we have his whole career plus a live interview, so that stuff’s real interesting to us.
