This particular one was a big game that was going to be Parker versus Carver. Big rivalries in Alabama and it was going to be both of them in Tuscaloosa. Deacon Willie McKinstry went out and he sold the game. And the good thing about McKinstry – he sold the game completely out. Every sponsor was an African American-owned business. And we – before we left to go down to Tuscaloosa – we ran with Paul, the station gave Paul a car, it was a big Lincoln. So we were gonna ride with Paul and go down to Tuscaloosa. And we were all in the station, laughing, Deacon saying “Yeah! Everyone go and do a good job!” and it was – you know I think there was somebody else there. There was a preacher there that night too. I can’t think of his name. He was the preacher at First Baptist Church in Fairfield. A very powerful preacher back then – Nevins,... C. Howard Nevins was there. And we all left and went out and did the game. And this game was a very, very exciting game. And to what my knowledge was it that at the end this guy named “Too Tall” or whatever it was, he shot, had a chance for Parker to win and he missed the whole goal. And when it was over from what I heard from his wife and from some other people, Deacon said, “They sure called that game.” He went to bed and passed away. He said, “They sure did call that game.” Bob Friedman: It was a good game? RJ: Oh yeah. And that was it. The next morning I came to town and, I was doing Bishop Jasper Roby’s show – I don’t know if you remember him? BF: I do. RJ: Yeah, he had a live broadcast show and I was the guy that did the commercials. BF: Yeah, we have the remote equipment. RJ: Okay, so I did the show and I went in that morning and was on my way there, and that’s when I found out what they were saying over there: pray for Willie McKinstry, and found out that he had died at that time. BF: Boy, that must have been a shock. Because he was really well-known. RJ: Yes. Yes. Ron began broadcasting at Howard University in the early 70's and came back to Birmingham where he had his first AM broadcast at WJLD in 1976. Ron, a member of the Alabama Broadcasters Hall of Fame, has been a valuable source of radio history for the BBRM. He reflects on many of his contemporaries whom our staff did not have the opportunity to interview; hence, many more pictures. And uh most the time he- he uh you know he got attached to my mother and my father. They were young when they got married and stuff. So, he, they basically kept him with them all the time. Then they- what was it - 1, 2, 3- he was five years older than my oldest brother. He was born on November 11th, 1941. Bob Friedman: Ok. Who are we talking about now for November 11th, 1941? PM: His nephew. Linwood McGinest junior. That’s who he grew up with. BF: Ok so Paul - you’re saying Paul grew up with Linwood McGinest junior? PM: Yes then-then-then my brother also grew up with my brother Willie Lee McGinest senior. BF: Ok so- PM: And then he-then he grew up with uh my sister, Ollie Mae McGinest . Grew up with her too. It was-it was three. Two nephews and then the niece that he grew up with. BF: He grew up-ok PM: Basically. BF: And he grew up with them in Dorothy’s house? PM: Yeah. Yeah, he grew up with us. Then-the house-then he what-what he did was I think he went to Ullman or Rosedale. One of the two. Rosedale high school or Ullman high. One of the two. BF: Now we have-we have a record from Rosedale but the record from- PM: Yeah that’s where he went to Rosedale. BF: But the record is only from the ninth grade and when-he was in the ninth grade in 1957 and ‘58, which would have made him like twenty years old in-in the in the ninth grade. So it seems that he must have moved around a whole lot. PM: Yeah. I don’t-I don’t- I couldn’t tell you exactly how they was but he had enlisted in- I think my mom when he got to be a certain age. He kinda talked to me but I don’t-I don’t remember a whole lot of it. But he enlisted in the United States Army you know that huh? BF: You know when? PM: He was a vet. BF: Do you know when he enlisted? PM: No. I don’t know exactly when he enlisted. BF: Ok. PM: Also he was a boxer in the US Army. Carolyn "Michelle" Shivers: I’m still in Little Rock. Still in Little Rock. BF: So you’re hearing about it. Did Gaston come up to see you guys? CMS: Uh-huh. Gaston and his wife, Minnie. That’s her name, Minnie. BF: Okay. Yes. Yes. CMS: And so, they came up and stayed with us for – actually, they stayed with Larry and his wife. Bob and I, we had an apartment. Larry and his wife had a house. And they stayed for a few days and we all just got together and everything. And that was his pitch to Larry, is “I want you to come down. Y’all come down and I want you to start this radio station up for me.” Obviously he’d heard some great things. So that’s when we packed up, moved back to Birmingham, and I was kicking and crying like a baby. I did not want to come back. BF: Why? CMS: I loved it there. I had carved a life there. It was just great. BF: You mean being on the air? CMS: No, I wasn’t on the air at that time I was just a little girl, a housewife – BF: You were happy. CMS: I was happy there with my friends. I met a lot of people there. ConFunkShun, I met them there. You know? I met a lot of people. But anyway, we got back here, and that’s when they came in and just – they actually brought that format. BF: Is ConFunkShun from Little Rock? Is that why you say that? CMS: No, they’re not from Little Rock. They were just there playing. BF: So, you met – CMS: I met them there, yeah. Right. Uh-huh. Very good friends with them. But when they came back, Larry and Bob – you know, of course they were inseparable, Bob was his sidekick – they brought that format back. Whatever format that was at KALO they brought it back here. KALO was a very progressive station. It wasn’t like the old-timey WENN Radio station here in the South. There it was very progressive. BF: What does that mean to you, progressive? CMS: Progressive? It means that, you know, they weren’t, you know, like the ringing of the cowbells or the screaming over the air. You know what I mean? It wasn’t like that. It was like straight radio. Like almost like Top-40, but in a Black market. So that was kind of new, that I had never heard before coming from Birmingham, right? Well, I mean a little bit we did 'cause I grew up in that hippie era with Father Tree and all of that and I was aware. But up there in KALO it was different. Bobby Hayden: He was the man who developed, founded the program at Alabama A&M, which is the first of all historical Black colleges in the United States. In two years, Paul White had the largest broadcast hookup – other than Notre Dame – in the United States. BF: Now that’s quite a mouthful. So… BH: He had eleven stations playing in two years. BF: He had… You’re saying that – BH: The first year of broadcasting he broadcasted eight games, home and road. A&M was the first Black college to broadcast a football game – home, road, day, or night in 1959. It was Paul White who led the way, who gathered all the sponsors and all the production. The most unique thing about Paul was at that time he didn’t drive. BF: He didn’t drive. BH: He didn’t own a car, nor could he drive. He’s broadcasting the football at Alabama A&M over two-years span of time – cost him his job at WEUP. He and Garrett fell out over the broadcast about the second year. It was so successful the first year, Woody Anderson was one of his sponsors. Woody Anderson bought in with the idea of giving him an automobile to pay for his time on the air and that created a problem ‘cause Garrett wanted Paul White to sell the car to give him the money. That was his pay for being one of the sponsors of A&M football. He gave Paul a car, then Paul had to learn how to drive. BF: Now Bob, back in the day because I see that it’s obvious that you’re close to Paul from the picture – are you hearing all of these stories from Paul? BH: No. I was part of all the show! Title A name given to the resource Bobby Hayden, Oral History Description An account of the resource Bobby Hayden (b.May 28, 1937) Born in Huntsville, Alabama, Bobby was very active with the sports program at Alabama A&M and worked closely with Paul White (who would become "Tall Paul" in Birmingham at WENN 1320 AM) who would broadcast A&M games on WEUP 1600 AM. Bobby also gave tours later on in life at the Underground Railroad safe house in Huntsville. In 1963, Hayden was one of the first African-American presidential honor guards. He served for Presidents Kennedy and Johnson, along with six other African-Americans who referred to themselves as "The Magnificent Seven.'' In this interview, Bobby talks about his relationship with Paul White and the overcoming of obstacles and racism while pioneering Black radio sports broadcasting. He also speaks of Paul White's relationship with Leroy Garrett, founder and owner of WEUP. Also present: Dr. Roy McRay Second sound file describes the first radio broadcast between Alabama A&M and Lane College (Jackson, TN). And also, they had a guy, a preacher, that was affiliated with the march...was named Reverend… I think it was Reverend Owens, I think his name was Owens... And he booked us, booked me, quite a few places. BF: When you say booked you, you mean the Five Blind Boys? RR: No, Me! I wasn't with the Blind Boys. BF: Oh okay. So what happened? How’d you lose the Blind Boys? RR: Well see now this – you’re going to go into – It’s a long story; I’m trying to dodge it. You want to hear? BF: Well, yeah. Sure. RR: How I left the Blind Boys was: the contract was up with Peacock and I went to Mr. Robey and I said, “Man, we need a car and we need some clothes.” And he said, “Well man, the record ain’t...stopped selling and....” I said, “Man, Sending Up My Timber was the biggest thing going on with any group, anywhere. You don’t have to tell me. I know about it.” Well, he said, “We can’t do nothing about it.” So I said, “Okay, Archie said the contract would be up in another two weeks or three weeks.” I said, “When it’s up I ain’t gonna sign.” Well it’s all right with me. So, we kept on and the contract was up and we did a show in Houston. Don Robey came up and said, “Hey man, I heard you all had signed with Chess.” I said, “Yeah. We signed with Chess.” I knew Leonard Chess and Phil Chess from R&B and blues singers, but not from gospel. And the students started coming, and the word had spreaded throughout the school. Of course, we had some teachers who tried to block us from leaving school. We also had some like Ms. Cleopatra Goree who was one of our teachers who would turn her back so the students could walk out and she could easily say well I didn’t know they were gone. Title A name given to the resource Arnold Dwight "Gatemouth" Moore, Oral History Description An account of the resource Arnold Dwight “Gatemouth” Moore - (b. Nov 8, 1913, d. May 19, 2004). Starting his career on the air at WIBW in Topeka, Kansas, his home town, in the 1930's, Moore was a major blues singer in the 1930’s and 40's and a prolific recording artist and gospel singer, minister and radio announcer in the 40's and 50’s... moving from AM 730 WDIA* Memphis in 1949 to AM 1220 WEDR and AM 1400 WJLD in Birmingham, from 1950 through 1957. His accomplishments can best be appreciated by listening to both interviews in the BBRM archive. This interview was done by phone while Gatemouth was at home in Yazoo, Mississippi. This early interview was the second done with Gatemouth Moore. One of Bob Friedman's earliest interviews, he was mainly working to have Moore share as much as he could of the lay of the land, regarding WEDR and WJLD announcers in the early 50's. Friedman's zeal is best expressed by his sharing with Gatemouth how the collection was growing and by his hope Moore would follow through sending Friedman his music. The BBRM was a year old and much information was still needed. Gatemouth refers to individuals that Friedman has not yet learned about. When Gatemouth does not eventually recall those names, we have placed a note to name the individual. * WDIA's power was rated at 250 watts from 1947 until 1954 when they changed frequencies to 1070 AM and were allowed to increase power to 50,000 watts. Title A name given to the resource Reflections on Maurice "Thin Man" King, from his wife Lessie King Description An account of the resource Richard Maurice "Thin Man" King (b.Sept. 15, 1937; d.June 17, 1980) - born in Uniontown, Alabama to mother Ora Lee Evans (her second marriage last name, not her maiden name) and father Konnie King. "Thin Man," as he was known on the air at WENN 1320 AM in the 1960's, had a very distinctive style on the air - explosive is one way to describe his delivery - announcing "Dandy Daddy Thin Man on the air!" King started his radio career in the early 1960's at WCLS, Columbus, Georgia, working with Doctor Jive (referenced by Shelley Stewart on his 1999 WATV broadcast), followed by a stint in Little Rock, Arkansas, before arriving at WENN radio in 1962. He left with most of the WENN staff during the 1976 walk-out protest over the firing of Station Manager Joe Lackey. They took over another station's frequency - 900 AM - and began WATV shortly thereafter in the Cabana Hotel on 2nd Ave North in Birmingham. They were asked to leave the same year and moved to Five Points Ensley Avenue, their current location. Maurice and his wife Lessie married on Dec. 9, 1962 and Lessie King consented to an interview on August 18, 2018 with additional information added on February 6, 2019. Both interviews were conducted over the phone with Lessie at home in Phoenix City, Alabama and Newnan, Georgia. She shares some of her remembrances from her 17 year marriage to Maurice. Bob: hmm Tommy: Jimmy was a First Lieutenant when he came back here…… Bob: hmm Tommy: And he would talk about the situation with Birmingham because Birmingham wasn't the best city to be in back in those days because we had Blacks getting killed by policemen every week and all of it was justificable homicide. Bob: hmm Tommy: And basically and mainly we didn’t have nothing you know like voter registration, ah, we talked about integration and all this kind of stuff you know and equal opportunity for peoples. That was mainly his conversation and he didn’t hold anything back…. Bob: Did he ever get in any trouble with the authorities? Tommy: No, I don’t think Jimmy ever got into any trouble with the authorities because Jimmy was a little arrogant himself. He really didn’t hold nothing back. I think he got out of high school ah in 62 and I got out in 64. WLAC was a popular station at the time with John Richbourg and "Hoss" Allen, but there was a little small station called WVOL there, too. Was very popular and the Black community grew up listening to people, uh, Clarence Kilcrease, better known as "Gilly Baby." I went to his appreciation about...Mm, 'bout six, seven months ago up in Nashville. One of the popular churches there. They were recognizing him. It's been there for years, but grew up listening to people like Ed Hall and Chuck Mitchell. Bill Perkins, Noble Blackwell. Bob Friedman: These were African Americans... DD: Yes BF: On the air. DD: Mhm. Very popular up there. As a matter of fact, Noble and Bill gave me my break. In Nashville at the time. But I just grew up listening to radio. Enjoyed the personalities. They were always upbeat and it always amazed me how they were able to be this way every day. Just friendly and lively and...course I've always loved music. BF: Mhm DD: And these guys just intrigued me. And I just listened to 'em day and night. And then late at night, I would turn over on WLAC and listen to "Hoss" Allen, John Richbourg. These guys just really excited me to listen to it. BF: Yeah DD: It was just something I started workin' on. BF: Mhm DD: And practicing my craft. Gettin' me a little small recorder and started recordin' my voice. BF: Mhm DD: Course, like most guys in this business back durin' that time, I got started in 1969. Started doin' parties. BF: Mhm DD: And I got recognized around the community doin' that and... BF: Did ya have your own system? DD: Yeah! Yeah, I did. At that time it was just one turntable. BF: Well... DD: It was an old P.A. system with a microphone and... BF: Mhm DD: a couple of speakers. BF: Yeah DD: And you know you get... BF: No scratching, huh? DD: (laughs) No scratching, then. BF: (laughs) DD: But, uh... BF: But uh... DD: We drew crowds. BF: What's your date of birth? I should ask that. DD: November 2nd, 1949. BF: Okay. DD: Yeah BF: Alright DD: I'll be 66 this year. BF: Alright DD: So BF: Well, that's a... DD: It's a blessing BF: Great. Yeah, absolutely. DD: Just two, uh. BF: Look great. BF: Look great. DD: Yeah, great. Thanks. BF: Oh yeah. DD: Radio's been good but I've seen it's changed a lot. BF: Yeah DD: You know, but I enjoyed it. I, um, started at VOL. WVOL in 1969. BF: What was the frequency? DD: 1470. BF: Mhm DD: Yeah. Still on. It's... BF: Was it a... DD: Still there. BF: Day-timer? Or what was it? DD: It's 24 hours. BF: Mhm DD: Um, it goes directional at night. I guess that signal... BF: Was it a thousand watts? DD: Probably a thousand watts directional coming South at night. BF: Yeah DD: Matter of fact, back during that time, some people surprisingly telling me they would pick up the signal in Huntsville. Course, it's changed a lot since then. BF: Mhm DD: Whatever thing is goin' on in radio, but uh, it was a fun time. Eh, those were the fun days of radio.
