WEUP Radio

Description

Box 3 Folder 55: "Folder 55 contains two pictures obtained from the WEUP website in Huntsville, Alabama. WEUP went on the air in 1958 as the first African American owned radio station in Alabama. Leroy Garrett was the owner and there is much in our Oral History collection on Mr. Garrett. His radio work started in a trailer shown in 55a and 55b shows Ike Rooks, one of Garrett's early announcers who took over for Paul "Tall Paul" White as sportscaster when Paul left WEUP for WENN in 1961. A number of other Birmingham announcers either passed through or ended up at WEUP including Jimmy Lawson, Sonrose Rutledge, Shelley Pope and Andrew Dawkins."
