Sterling Jubilee Singers
Description
Box 3 Folder 8: "Moving along to folder 8, these are pictures of the Sterling Jubilee Singers of Bessemer, Alabama, with Tiger Thompson shown in the center with bow tie. That picture came from Doug Seroff’s booklet "Birmingham Quartet Scrapbook" from October of 1980. Doug Seroff is a scholar of the Black quartet tradition and made many trips to Birmingham in the 1970's and 80's interviewing many quartet members. His book with collaborator Lynn Abbott on the subject, "To Do This, You Must Know How" is a classic on the subject.
Not in Folder 8 but scanned (scan b) for the online archive is a scan of the CIO Singers 78 RPM record, "Spirit of Phillip Murray, a tribute to the United Steel Workers President upon his death in 1952. Tiger Thompson of Birmingham radio fame among many accomplishments, created a label to have the Sterling Jubilees record the tribute. It's a classic and can be heard on Youtube.
Also in included online is the cover (scan c) of Seroff and Abbott's book mentioned in Folder 8, scan a."
